Unpacking: Holocaust Survivors Making Montreal Home Post World War II

October 23, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Seventy years ago, in 1947, Canada reluctantly opened its doors to displaced persons (DP) living in Europe. Between 1947 and March 1950, Canada granted admission to over 98,000 DPs. Only 11,064, or 11.3%, were Jews – Holocaust survivors. Once in Canada, 55% of survivors went to Montreal, 35% to Toronto; and 10% to the rest of Canada.
The research of Dr. Zelda Abramson, sociologist at Acadia University, traced the lived experiences of Holocaust survivors who settled in Montreal, drawing on more than 70 interviews, hundreds of social service case files, and archival documents.
The evening will present several dramatic readings that capture the challenges and successes the survivors faced integrating into Montreal and Canadian life.

There is no cost for this event.
