SUMMARY:Atlantic Jewish Film Festival - "Carvalho's Journey"
DESCRIPTION:English\, Documentary\, with special guest\, Adrian Fish \nDirector / Producer / Writer: Steve Rivo    Narrator: Michael Stuhlbarg\nDistributor: The National Center for Jewish Film\nCountry: USA    Year: 2015     Running Time: 85 minutes\nA real-life 19th century American western adventure story about Solomon Nunes Carvalho\, an observant Sephardic Jew born in 1815 in Charleston\, South Carolina. In 1853\, traveling with John Fremont’s 5th Westward Expedition\, Carvalho became one of the first photographers to document the sweeping vistas and treacherous terrain of the far American West. Living alongside mountain men\, Native Americans\, and Mormons\, Carvalho overcame enormous odds to produce beautiful art: daguerreotypes that became the lens through which the world experienced the West. \nIn partnership with Photopolis: The Halifax Festival of Photography

It is the first in a cycle of stories that occur in the mythical Jewish city of fools known as Chelm. \nAlisa Snyder\, illustrator\, will be at the screening.\nAlisa Snyder\, Lubin illustrator is a painter whose primary subjects have been the figure\, still life and landscape. Central to her practice is an emotional response to nature and painting in history. Her love of music has always been a part of her life and practice as a visual artist and illustrating David Yang’s score and story was a special pleasure. \nRAZZMATAZZ FOR KIDS \n \nSandy Greenberg and Thomas Cormier of Razzmatazz for Kids will get you hugging someone you love\, clucking like a chicken\, riding a bumpy bus\, singing\, hopping\, dancing\, clapping your hands\, or performing on stage with them at their fun children’s concert of both well-known and original songs. They have been delighting young audiences for over 20 years at festivals\, special events\, and schools. Sesame Street made a music video of their song\, “Going to my Grandma’s”. Razzmatazz for Kids was invited to perform for the First Ladies of the United States and Canada at the National Library in Ottawa\, and has been a featured performer with Symphony Nova Scotia. Razzmatazz for Kids has won “Children’s Recording of the Year” at the East Coast Music Awards\, “Children’s Group of the Year” from Music Nova Scotia\, and a “Recommended” Award from Parents’ Choice in the United States. This show\, for the Atlantic Jewish Film Festival\, will include songs in English\, Yiddish and Hebrew.

SUMMARY:Atlantic Jewish Film Festival - Short Program
DESCRIPTION:Bring your lunch to the Short Program! Special guest\, Stephen Cooke\, will be in attendance at the Short Program. \nWOMEN IN SINK \n \nHebrew with English subtitles \nDirector/Producer: Iris Zaki\nDistributor: Go2Films\nCountry: UK\, Israel   Year: 2015  Running Time: 36 minutes\nThe Jewish director of this film installed a camera over the hair washing basin in a small salon owned by a Christian Arab woman in Haifa\, Israel. As she washes their hair\, she talks with the clients\, both Jews and Arabs\, posing questions about life in Israel. What emerges from these conversations is an honest and nuanced portrait of contemporary Israel. \nTHE CHOP \n \nEnglish \nDirector: Lewis Rose\nProducer: Daphne Hocguard\nCAST Amir Boutrous\, Andy Linden\, Daniel Kramer\, Sajid Varda\nDistributor: Salaud Morisset\nCountry: UK    Year: 2015   Running Time: 17 minutes\nYossi\, a charismatic Kosher butcher with lightning quick knife-wielding skills\, angers his boss and loses his job. He does the rounds of other kosher butchers to no avail so decides to disguise himself as Muslim in order to find work at a Halal butcher shop. While this short film is a comedy incorporating “fish out of water” and laugh-out-loud slapstick humour\, it’s also a story that explores the relationship between Jews and Muslims. \nA CANTOR ON TRIAL \n \nYiddish with English Subtitles \nDirector/Producer: Sidney M. Goldin\nCAST: Louis “Leibele” Waldman\nMusic by Sholem Secunda\nDistributor: The National Center for Jewish Film\nCountry: USA   Year: 1931   Running Time: 10 minutes\nIn this hilarious musical comedy gem\, legendary cantor Leibele Waldman plays all three candidates auditioning for a synagogue committee in search of a High Holidays cantor. Displeased\nwith the first two applicants\, a Galitzianer and a Daytsher (German)\, the committee finds its man: a modern chazan with “pep and jazz” who does Kol Nidre with a “two-step.” \nCanada Premiere of New Digital Restoration & new English subtitles by The National Center for Jewish Film \nJOE’S VIOLIN \n \nEnglish \nDirector: Kahane Cooperman\nProducers:  Kahane Cooperman\, Raphaela Neihausen\nCAST: Joe Feingold\, Brianna Perez\nDistributor: Go2Films\nCountry: USA    Year 2016    Running Time: 24 minutes\nIn this award winning documentary short\, a 91 year old Holocaust survivor donates the violin he’s owned for 70 years to a local instrument drive\, changing the life of a 12 year old girl from one of America’s poorest districts and\, unexpectedly\, his own.
