SUMMARY:International Holocaust Remembrance Day Program
DESCRIPTION:1945\nHungary\, 2017\nHungarian (with English subtitles)\n91 minutes\nA fresh\, intelligent cinematic approach to a difficult topic that takes on a transitional time in Hungarian history with subtlety and nuance. – VARIETY\nHungary’s past is replete with unprocessed trauma.\nBased on the acclaimed short story “Homecoming” by Gábor T. Szántó\,\nFerenc Török\, director\, guides the audience back to 1945 with his new film. Two\nOrthodox Jews’ arrival in a remote Hungarian village catalyzes an unwelcome\nreckoning with the recent past for the local inhabitants. In the presence of\nSoviet soldiers\, the people of a little village are getting prepared for the wedding of\nthe notary’s son\, all the while trying to ignore the fact that they deported a\nsignificant part of the town’s Jewish community the previous year.\nClosing remarks by Dr. Dorota Glowacka\, University of King’s College\, with reception to follow.\nPresented by the Atlantic Jewish Council in partnership with Diversity Spotlight\, Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 and the University of King’s College. Bronfman Theatre\, Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21\, 1055 Marginal Road\, Halifax.

SUMMARY:NaKh and Nosh: Bible Beyond the Torah
DESCRIPTION:Although Jews are the people of the book\, there are many parts of the Jewish bible\, the TaNaKh\, we never read in services. The word TaNaKh is an acronym for the Jewish bible’s 3 categories of books: the Torah (the five books of Moses)\, Nevi’im (the Prophets)\, and Ketuvim (the Scriptures). Over the course of the Jewish year\, we read the full Torah\, but we never read the full books of NaKh (Nevi’im and Ketuvim).\nBut that has changed at Shaar Shalom!\nEach session\, we study one more chapter of NaKh: discovering why these words were so sacred to our ancestors\, and why so few Jews read them (outside of Halifax\, that is). Find Rabbi Rank’s table at kiddush for a little “NaKh and Nosh.”
