SUMMARY:Old Stock: A Refugee Love Story
DESCRIPTION:“Old Stock: A Refugee Love Story”\nwritten by Hannah Moscovitch\, Ben Caplan\, and Christian Barry & directed by Christian Barry \nAbout the Production\n2b theatre company\, a local Halifax company\, joins forces with 2 young Jewish adults living in Halifax: klezmer-folk sensation Ben Caplan and Dora Award-winning local playwright Hannah Moscovitch to tell a Canadian Jewish refugee story that hits close to home. \nThis genre-bending music-theatre hybrid is inspired by the real-life story of Moscovitch’s great-grandparents\, both Romanian Jews\, immigrating to Canada in the early twentieth century. Ben Caplan plays the mysterious emcee in this examination of the refugee experience\, viewed through the historical lens of Jewish immigrants a hundred years ago. And it’s also a love story. The show will take the form of a humourously dark folktale woven together with a high-energy concert. \nFor this night only of the show’s run\, there will be a talk-back after the production featuring the show’s producers and a local Jewish newcomer\, comparing and contrasting the Jewish immigration experiences of past and present.  \nTicketing Details\nEarly bird tickets are $25 and will be available until April 1st\, at which point General Admission tickets will be $30. The AJC has arranged a 20% group ticket discount on top of these prices for the night of May 11th\, available by promo code only. Please email nrosenfeld@theajc.ns.ca to obtain this code. \nOnce you have this code\, tickets can be purchased online at: http://www.tickethalifax.com/events/42156692/old-stock-a-refugee-love-story \nUnderwaged tickets are available to anyone with limited disposable income\, including (but not limited to) students\, arts workers\, and seniors on fixed incomes.

SUMMARY:A Conversation with Garry Williams about "KAMP"
DESCRIPTION:Halifax director\, actor\, & musician Garry Williams has teamed with Jamie Bradley to create a musical about the experience of gay men in concentration camps during the Holocaust.  Excerpts from the production were presented at Halifax Central Library on April 24th.  People have questioned the idea of a musical about the Holocaust\, but in fact\, this is not so very different from Jews who surreptitiously celebrated Shabbat or Jewish holidays in the camps.  For gay men\, many of whom were performers before being interned in camps\, making music\, even in these places\, was a way to retain their humanity. \n Garry Williams is interested in having a conversation with the Jewish community about how he came up with the idea\, and how the show has been realized.  Join the conversation over Kiddush after Saturday morning services.
