SUMMARY:NaKh and Nosh: Bible Beyond the Torah
DESCRIPTION:Although Jews are the people of the book\, there are many parts of the Jewish bible\, the TaNaKh\, we never read in services. The word TaNaKh is an acronym for the Jewish bible’s 3 categories of books: the Torah (the five books of Moses)\, Nevi’im (the Prophets)\, and Ketuvim (the Scriptures). Over the course of the Jewish year\, we read the full Torah\, but we never read the full books of NaKh (Nevi’im and Ketuvim).\nBut that has changed at Shaar Shalom!\nEach session\, we study one more chapter of NaKh: discovering why these words were so sacred to our ancestors\, and why so few Jews read them (outside of Halifax\, that is). This Shabbat we will have a special presentation on Legal Challenges Facing Israel in the International Arena during services ( in place of Rabbi Weiss’ sermon). Come hear Israeli Foreign Ministry’s Director of International Law\, Sarah Weiss-Ma’udi speak on the current set of challenges and opportunities Israel faces with its neighbours. Sarah Weiss Ma’udi\, Adv. is the Director of the International Law Department at the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  In this position\, she has served as counsel in matters relating to: maritime law; water law; international borders; international law relating to natural gas and oil\, the recognition of states; Israeli domestic sanctions policies; human rights law; humanitarian law and Israeli policies vis-à-vis its neighbors (Jordan\, Egypt\, Syria\, Lebanon\, and the Palestinians) and the European Union.
