DESCRIPTION:Barry Pakes is a Public Health specialist physician\, who also works in primary care and emergency medicine. He is a Royal College Fellow in Public Health and Preventive Medicine\, has an MPH from Harvard School of Public Health\, a Diploma in Tropical Medicine from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia and a PhD in Public Health Ethics from the University of Toronto. He has experience working globally\, in Northern communities\, in local and regional public health\, and with the WHO Ethics Group. For the past year\, he has been acting as Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health in Nunavut. He is currently the Program Director of the Public Health and Preventive Medicine Residency program at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health\, the Program Director for the Global Health Education Initiative and is Global Health Lead for Post Graduate Medical Education at the University of Toronto. His main areas of interest are in Global Health Ethics\, Post-Graduate Global Health Education\, Vaccinology and Tobacco Control\, and Public Health Halacha. \nScholar in Residence  – Dr. Barry Pakes\, of the World Health Organization\, will join us for a fascinating discussion about medical ethics on Shabbat June 3rd. \nJoin us for a kiddush luncheon and a sidedish of medical ethics. \nA Jew at the WHO: Ebola\, Zika and Pandemic Ethics in Halacha\n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:NaKh and Nosh: Bible Beyond the Torah
DESCRIPTION:Although Jews are the people of the book\, there are many parts of the Jewish bible\, the TaNaKh\, we never read in services. The word TaNaKh is an acronym for the Jewish bible’s 3 categories of books: the Torah (the five books of Moses)\, Nevi’im (the Prophets)\, and Ketuvim (the Scriptures). Over the course of the Jewish year\, we read the full Torah\, but we never read the full books of NaKh (Nevi’im and Ketuvim).\nBut that has changed at Shaar Shalom!\nEach session\, we study one more chapter of NaKh: discovering why these words were so sacred to our ancestors\, and why so few Jews read them (outside of Halifax\, that is). SUMMARY:The Canadian Jewish Experience
DESCRIPTION:The Canadian Jewish Experience is a volunteer initiative to celebrate Canada and the contributions made by Jews to the building of a modern country.\nThe Canadian Jewish Experience is presented through a detailed exhibit. It focuses on nine major themes\, including patterns of immigration\, war and diplomacy\, public service\, justice and human rights\, economic growth\, arts\, culture and sports.\nThis weekend the exhibit will be shown in part at both The Shaar and The Beth.
