SUMMARY:NaKh and Nosh: Bible Beyond the Torah
DESCRIPTION:Although Jews are the people of the book\, there are many parts of the Jewish bible\, the TaNaKh\, we never read in services. The word TaNaKh is an acronym for the Jewish bible’s 3 categories of books: the Torah (the five books of Moses)\, Nevi’im (the Prophets)\, and Ketuvim (the Scriptures). Over the course of the Jewish year\, we read the full Torah\, but we never read the full books of NaKh (Nevi’im and Ketuvim).\nBut that has changed at Shaar Shalom!\nEach session\, we study one more chapter of NaKh: discovering why these words were so sacred to our ancestors\, and why so few Jews read them (outside of Halifax\, that is). SUMMARY:A Jew at the WHO (World Health Organization)
DESCRIPTION:Barry Pakes is a Public Health specialist physician\, who also works in primary care and emergency medicine. He is a Royal College Fellow in Public Health and Preventive Medicine\, has an MPH from Harvard School of Public Health\, a Diploma in Tropical Medicine from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia and a PhD in Public Health Ethics from the University of Toronto. He has experience working globally\, in Northern communities\, in local and regional public health\, and with the WHO Ethics Group. For the past year\, he has been acting as Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health in Nunavut. He is currently the Program Director of the Public Health and Preventive Medicine Residency program at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health\, the Program Director for the Global Health Education Initiative and is Global Health Lead for Post Graduate Medical Education at the University of Toronto. His main areas of interest are in Global Health Ethics\, Post-Graduate Global Health Education\, Vaccinology and Tobacco Control\, and Public Health Halacha. \nScholar in Residence  – Dr. Barry Pakes\, of the World Health Organization\, will join us for a fascinating discussion about medical ethics on Shabbat June 3rd. \nJoin us for a kiddush luncheon and a sidedish of medical ethics. \nA Jew at the WHO: Ebola\, Zika and Pandemic Ethics in Halacha\n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Late Night with the "Rabbis"
DESCRIPTION:On the first night of Shavuot Jewish throughout the world observe the centuries-old custom of conducting an all-night vigil dedicated to Torah learning\, and preparation for receiving the Torah anew the next morning. One explanation for this tradition is that the Jewish people did not rise early on the day G-d gave the Torah\, and it was necessary for G-d Himself to awaken them. To compensate for their behavior\, Jews have accepted upon themselves the custom of remaining awake all night.

DESCRIPTION:Although Jews are the people of the book\, there are many parts of the Jewish bible\, the TaNaKh\, we never read in services. The word TaNaKh is an acronym for the Jewish Bible’s 3 categories of books: the Torah (the five books of Moses)\, Nevi’im (the Prophets)\, and Ketuvim (the Scriptures). Over the course of the Jewish year\, we read the full Torah\, but we never read the full books of NaKh (Nevi’im and Ketuvim). \nFollowing Shabbat services\, join NaKh and Nosh and explore the later parts of the TaNaKh (Bible) with Rabbi Rank.

DESCRIPTION:Shabbat morning services begin at 9:15 a.m. every Saturday.  Shabbat liturgy\, nusach and Divrei Torah delivered by our Rabbi make each Shabbat inspiring for those attending.  There are also many occasions throughout the year when the congregation will hold special Shabbat services\, from a scholar-in-residence Shabbat to a university student Shabbat and more. This Shabbat celebrates the bat mitzvah of Rebecca Schelew. \nCongregants are encouraged to contribute to Shabbat services by chanting a Haftorah or delivering a D’var Torah.  Please contact the Rabbi to make arrangements.  The Rabbi will also be happy to guide you along the way.
