SUMMARY:NaKh and Nosh: Bible Beyond the Torah
DESCRIPTION:Although Jews are the people of the book\, there are many parts of the Jewish bible\, the TaNaKh\, we never read in services. The word TaNaKh is an acronym for the Jewish bible’s 3 categories of books: the Torah (the five books of Moses)\, Nevi’im (the Prophets)\, and Ketuvim (the Scriptures). Over the course of the Jewish year\, we read the full Torah\, but we never read the full books of NaKh (Nevi’im and Ketuvim).\nBut that has changed at Shaar Shalom!\nEach session\, we study one more chapter of NaKh: discovering why these words were so sacred to our ancestors\, and why so few Jews read them (outside of Halifax\, that is). Find Rabbi Rank’s table at kiddush for a little “NaKh and Nosh.”

SUMMARY:The Shaar Breakfast Club presents: The Jewish Women’s Renaissance Project
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we share our experiences\, reflections and inspirations from our recent Jewish Women’s Renaissance Project trip to Israel last November. \nSpearheaded by a generous donor and the AJC\, 14 women from Halifax\, all mothers of Jewish children under 18 and living at home\, shared an 8 day experience in Israel.  The trip consisted of touring\, classes and lectures and was designed to show us Israel’s soul rather than tourist sites.  We have all committed to monthly meetings for a year to deepen our Jewish learning\, friendship and connection to our community. Come share breakfast with some of our participants and hear how much of an impact this brief time has had on our lives and families. We hope to see you there! \nPlease RSVP via joannamirskywexler@gmail.com in order to better plan for numbers (of bagels!) \nThere will be a donation basket at the door – $5 is suggested.

SUMMARY:Yom HaShoah Ceremony 2018
DESCRIPTION:The AJC’s 2018 Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) Ceremony in Halifax will take place this year on Thursday\, April 12\, at 7 PM\, at Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21.\nThe event will feature a candle-lighting ceremony\, a presentation from the teenage participants of the 2017 Asper Foundation Human Rights and Holocaust Studies Program\, and a talk from special guest Allan Rosenfeld\, a physician and Holocaust Education advocate from Toronto who recently published his first book entitled Holocaust Lumber. \nReserve your seat here to confirm your attendance: https://yomhashoahpier21.eventbrite.ca \nAbout Holocaust Lumber: \nGrowing up on a lumberyard just outside Toronto\, Allan knew that he was different from most other kids. But it wasn’t the stacks of wood or the hard work of helping out around the yard that defined him – it was his role as the child of two Holocaust survivors. Always and above all else\, Allan knew that his parents had suffered through terrible atrocities\, and that he couldn’t cause them any more pain\, under any circumstances.\nHolocaust Lumber is a collection of 30 short stories that capture the complexities and humanity of his parents. Told with unflinching honesty\, these stories capture a world of lumber and love\, a setting of sweetness and survival\, a nightmare of guilt\, and the lighthearted\, absurd moments that are part of all families.

SUMMARY:Genesis: A Living Conversation
DESCRIPTION:The stories in the book of Genesis such as\, creation\, humanity’s fall\, the flood\, Abraham and Isaac etc.\, have intrigued and inspired Jews\, Christians\, and Muslims alike for millennia. In the 1990s Bill Moyers facilitated a 10-part series on Genesis to stimulate interfaith dialogue in a democratic spirit. In the original PBS series\, writers\, artists\, psychologists\, composers\, and Biblical scholars\, debated and discovered the great stories of Genesis.\nDavid Atwood\, an intern minister at Rockingham United Church has initiated a Genesis Study group here in Halifax using video materials from the original PBS series as a resource. All are invited to become a part of the conversation which explores this important part of the three Abrahamic faiths.

SUMMARY:Shabbat Morning Service (Day 1\, Pesach)
DESCRIPTION:Shabbat morning services begin at 9:15 a.m. every Saturday.  Shabbat liturgy\, nusach and Divrei Torah delivered by our Rabbi make each Shabbat inspiring for those attending.  There are also many occasions throughout the year when the congregation will hold special Shabbat services\, from a scholar-in-residence Shabbat to a university student Shabbat and more. This Shabbat we celebrate the first day of Pesach. \nCongregants are encouraged to contribute to Shabbat services by chanting a Haftorah or delivering a D’var Torah.  Please contact the Rabbi to make arrangements.  The Rabbi will also be happy to guide you along the way.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a spirited megillah reading including live musical comedy entertainment by our rabbinic team! Come in your best costume and be ready to make some noise and enjoy refreshments.\nAside from reading the megillah\, one of the key observances of Purim is helping those in need with gifts of food and money.
