SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: The beginning of Jewish life in Canada: Abraham de Sola first Jewish minister in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, December 4th at 12:00pm at the Starbucks on Quinpool and Vernon\nProfessor Calvin Kalman (father of our member Sam Kalman) of Montreal will share with us some fascinating\, unpublished personal history about his family’s patriarch\, Rabbi Abraham de Sola\, his ancestry\, his legacy as leader of the first synagogue in Montreal\, and his role in North American Jewry. Everyone is warmly welcome to attend. \nAbraham de Sola: his ancestry\, leader of the first synagogue in Montreal and his role in North American Jewry. \n As a conciliatory gesture Dr. de Sola was asked to deliver the opening prayer at the House of Representatives on January 9\, 1872. To this day he is the only Canadian minister to be so honoured. Reverend de Sola’s greatness as a scholar is in part attested to by the number and quality of his publications in both the secular and Jewish press.  Abraham de Sola frequently visited the United States\, and\, through his pulpit addresses and numerous contributions to the press\, became recognized there as one of the most powerful leaders of Orthodoxy\, at a time when the struggle between the Orthodox and Reform wings of the community was at an acute stage.

SUMMARY:The Touch of a Woman in War: NaKh & Nosh reads Judges 4
DESCRIPTION:Women lead the revolution. Devorah governs and appoints Barak to muster Israelite fighters. The enemy Sisera seeks refuge with Ya’el\, who doesn’t provide much of a roof over his head. Why is this drama part of the Hebrew Bible\, and why do we benefit from reading this in the 21st century? Join Rabbi Rank during Kiddush to find out all that and more as we gather for a little NaKh (the final two thirds of the Bible) and a little Nosh (“senseless eating”).

SUMMARY:Chai Mitzvah Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Chai Mitzvah is a program to enhance Jewish engagement. Like a book group\, Chai Mitzvah network groups meet monthly for meaningful text-based discussions. What sets Chai Mitzvah apart from education programs is that each person in the group builds their ‘Jewish Bucket List’ by adopting or deepening a spiritual practice\, engaging in a social action project of their choosing\, and identifying something Jewish to learn about. The cost of all of the packets is $36 USD\, which each participant pays once at the beginning. \nAfter meeting for nine months\, participants receive a certificate of completion and a tree is planted in Israel in their honor.

SUMMARY:NaKh and Nosh: Bible Beyond the Tora
DESCRIPTION:Otni’el ben Kenaz gets a new job\, saviour for the people of Israel–which is great (until he dies). The big powerful King Eglon of Mo’av tries to subdue the Israelites\, and the humbled nation’s eyes turn to a new hero: the double-pointed-sword-slinging Ehud ben Gera. Suffice it to say\, the rest of this story isn’t the kind of thing you want to hear over dinner. But kiddush is just fine! Find Rabbi Rank’s table after morning services to join for a little NaKh (the final 2/3 of the Hebrew Bible) and a little nosh (“snack”). \n  \n
