SUMMARY:NaKh and Nosh: Bible Beyond the Torah
DESCRIPTION:Although Jews are the people of the book\, there are many parts of the Jewish bible\, the TaNaKh\, we never read in services. The word TaNaKh is an acronym for the Jewish bible’s 3 categories of books: the Torah (the five books of Moses)\, Nevi’im (the Prophets)\, and Ketuvim (the Scriptures). Over the course of the Jewish year\, we read the full Torah\, but we never read the full books of NaKh (Nevi’im and Ketuvim).\nBut that has changed at Shaar Shalom!\nEach session\, we study one more chapter of NaKh: discovering why these words were so sacred to our ancestors\, and why so few Jews read them (outside of Halifax\, that is). DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, December 4th at 12:00pm at the Starbucks on Quinpool and Vernon\nProfessor Calvin Kalman (father of our member Sam Kalman) of Montreal will share with us some fascinating\, unpublished personal history about his family’s patriarch\, Rabbi Abraham de Sola\, his ancestry\, his legacy as leader of the first synagogue in Montreal\, and his role in North American Jewry. Everyone is warmly welcome to attend.  \nAbraham de Sola: his ancestry\, leader of the first synagogue in Montreal and his role in North American Jewry. \n As a conciliatory gesture Dr. de Sola was asked to deliver the opening prayer at the House of Representatives on January 9\, 1872. To this day he is the only Canadian minister to be so honoured. Reverend de Sola’s greatness as a scholar is in part attested to by the number and quality of his publications in both the secular and Jewish press.  Abraham de Sola frequently visited the United States\, and\, through his pulpit addresses and numerous contributions to the press\, became recognized there as one of the most powerful leaders of Orthodoxy\, at a time when the struggle between the Orthodox and Reform wings of the community was at an acute stage.

DESCRIPTION:Shabbat morning services begin at 9:15 a.m. every Saturday.  Shabbat liturgy\, nusach and Divrei Torah delivered by our Rabbi make each Shabbat inspiring for those attending.  There are also many occasions throughout the year when the congregation will hold special Shabbat services\, from a scholar-in-residence Shabbat to a university student Shabbat and more. SUMMARY:2018 Dankner Education Fund Siddur Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Following Shabbat services on November 17th\nThanks to the generosity of Dankner family and the the Gordon Dankner Education Fund\, this year each grade 7 student will receive her/his own personal\, inscribed siddur (prayer book) to use in honour of her/his bar/bat mitzvah. The Dankner family is pleased to celebrate the legacy of “Mr. D” through the presentation of these siddurim (prayer books) and are honoured to be part of the continuing Jewish practice and life of the students he so loved. A Jr. Congregation service in the small chapel will be included as part of the morning.

SUMMARY:Shabbat Morning Service and Bar Mitzvah of Aviv Honey
DESCRIPTION:Shabbat morning services begin at 9:15 a.m. every Saturday.  Shabbat liturgy\, nusach and Divrei Torah delivered by our Rabbi make each Shabbat inspiring for those attending.  There are also many occasions throughout the year when the congregation will hold special Shabbat services\, from a scholar-in-residence Shabbat to a university student Shabbat and more. This Shabbat we will celebrate the Bar Mitzvah of Aviv Honey. \nCongregants are encouraged to contribute to Shabbat services by chanting a Haftorah or delivering a D’var Torah.  Please contact the Rabbi to make arrangements.  The Rabbi will also be happy to guide you along the way.
