Tashlikh\, which means “cast away\,” is a ritual where participants symbolically cast off their sins by gathering near the sea or running water and toss some fish food (bread crumbs) while reciting prayers of repentance. It is a physical reminder of the human effort to cast away one’s sins.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Judith R. Cohen is a Canadian scholar and singer known for her work in Sephardic music and related traditions. Her ethnomusicological work and her life as a performer are intertwined. Village songs of Spain and Portugal\, narrative ballads and stories in English and pan-European traditions\, Balkan singing\, songs of French Canada\, Yiddish\, and music of Medieval Europe are among her performance and workshop repertoires. As an ethnomusicologist\, Dr. Cohen has spent many years of fieldwork on the lives of Portuguese Bnei Anusim\, often known as Crypto-Jews\, direct descendants of the Jews who maintained their identity throughout the centuries of the Inquisition. \nFREE ADMISSION  \n

SUMMARY:Dedication of the Morris & Esther Strug Memorial Garden
DESCRIPTION:A generous donation from the Strug family has made it possible to construct a permanent\, covered\, and landscaped seating area (with ritual wash station) in the Shaar Shalom Cemetery. At 10am on Sunday\, July 21st\, the Strug family will dedicate the area in memory of Morris and Esther Strug. The “Morris and Esther Strug Memorial Garden” is a touching way to remember forever two founding members of the Shaar Shalom. The beautiful seating area is nestled under a tree and oversees the final resting place of many of our other founding members as well as those who have been part of the Shaar community since.
