DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting will be Sunday\, May 23  at 12:30pm in the comfort of your own home via Zoom! \nWe will be discussing Linda Grant’s When I Lived in Modern Times. \nJoin Zoom Meeting https://zoom.us/j/99763615875?pwd=bWovNE1MeG9Yc0w4RDB3Yk1DTGJCdz09  \nMeeting ID: 997 6361 5875 \nPasscode: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS\n\nIn the spring of 1946\, Evelyn Sert stands on the deck of a ship bound for Palestine. For the twenty-year-old from London\, it is a time of adventure and change when all things seem possible. \nSwept up in the spirited\, chaotic churning of her new\, strange country\, she joins a kibbutz\, then moves on to the teeming metropolis of Tel Aviv\, to find her own home and a group of friends as eccentric and disparate as the city itself. She falls in love with a man who is not what he seems when she becomes an unwitting spy for a nation fighting to be born. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nLinda Grant was born in Liverpool\, England in 1951\, and read English at the University of York. \nHer first novel\, The Cast Iron Shore (1996)\, won the David Higham Prize for Fiction and was shortlisted for the Guardian Fiction Prize. Her second\, When I Lived in Modern Times (2000)\, set in Palestine immediately after the Second World War\, won the Orange Prize for Fiction and was shortlisted for the Jewish Quarterly Literary Prize for Fiction. Her novel\, Still Here (2002)\, set in Liverpool\, tells the story of a middle-aged English woman and her relationship with an American architect. Her non-fiction includes Sexing the Millennium: A Political History of the Sexual Revolution (1993) and Remind Me Who I Am\, Again (1998)\, an account of her mother’s dementia\, which won the MIND Book of the Year/Allen Lane Award. The People on the Street: A Writer’s View of Israel (2006)\, was winner of the 2006 Lettre Ulysses Award; and The Clothes on Their Backs (2008) was shortlisted for the 2008 Man Booker Prize for Fiction. The Thoughful Dresser (2009) was followed by We Had It So Good (2011) and Upstairs at the Party (2014)\, her most recent novel. \nLinda Grant lives in North London.

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:BOOK CLUB MEETING \nOur next meeting will be Sunday\, April 18 at 12:30 PM\, in the comfort of your own home via Zoom!\nWe will be discussing Naomi Lewis’s Tiny Lights for Travellers. \nJoin Zoom Meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82832241042?pwd=aVdoRkNBNHJsUnF4c2FTWTRURytYdz09https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82832241042?pwd=aVdoRkNBNHJsUnF4c2FTWTRURytYdz09\nMeeting ID: 828 3224 1042 Passcode: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS\n\nWhy couldn’t I occupy the world as those model-looking women did\, with their flowing hair\, pulling their tiny bright suitcases as if to say\, I just arrived from elsewhere\, and I already belong here\, and this sidewalk belongs to me? \nWhen her marriage suddenly ends\, and a diary documenting her beloved Opa’s escape from Nazi-occupied Netherlands in the summer of 1942 is discovered\, Naomi Lewis decides to retrace his journey to freedom. Travelling alone from Amsterdam to Lyon\, she discovers family secrets and her own narrative as a second-generation Jewish Canadian. With vulnerability\, humour\, and wisdom\, Lewis’s memoir asks tough questions about her identity as a secular Jew\, the accuracy of family stories\, and the impact of the Holocaust on subsequent generations. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nNaomi K. Lewis is the author of the novel Cricket in a Fist\, the short story collection I Know Who You Remind Me Of\, and the co-editor of the anthology Shy. Her memoir\, Tiny Lights for Travellers\, was a finalist for the 2019 Governor General’s Literary Award for Nonfiction. Her journalism has been shortlisted for provincial and national magazine awards\, and she has served as writer in residence at the University of New Brunswick and the Calgary Public Library. She lives in Calgary and sometimes Kelowna.

SUMMARY:Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting will be Sunday\, March 21 at 12:30 PM\, in the comfort of your own home via Zoom! \nWe will be discussing Gary Barwin’s Yiddish for Pirates. \nZoom Meeting Info\nJoin Zoom Meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82114898611?pwd=Y1pqYlpwdGNaeHpYM2RPM09WcmRFQT09\nMeeting ID: 821 1489 8611\nPassword: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS\n\nShortlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize \nNominated for the Governor-General’s Award for Literature \nSet in the years around 1492\, Yiddish for Pirates recounts the compelling story of Moishe\, a Bar Mitzvah boy who leaves home to join a ship’s crew\, where he meets Aaron\, the polyglot parrot who becomes his near-constant companion. \nFrom a present-day Florida nursing home\, this wisecracking yet poetic bird guides us through a world of pirate ships\, Yiddish jokes and treasure maps. But Inquisition Spain is a dangerous time to be Jewish and Moishe joins a band of hidden Jews trying to preserve some forbidden books. He falls in love with a young woman\, Sarah; though they are separated by circumstance\, Moishe’s wanderings are motivated as much by their connection as by his quest for loot and freedom. When all Jews are expelled from Spain\, Moishe travels to the Caribbean with the ambitious Christopher Columbus\, a self-made man who loves his creator. Moishe eventually becomes a pirate and seeks revenge on the Spanish while seeking the ultimate booty: the Fountain of Youth. \nThis outstanding New Face of Fiction is filled with Jewish takes on classic pirate tales–fights\, prison escapes\, and exploits on the high seas–but it’s also a tender love story\, between Moishe and Sarah\, and between Aaron and his “shoulder\,” Moishe. Rich with puns\, colourful language\, post-colonial satire and Kabbalistic hijinks\, Yiddish for Pirates is also a compelling examination of mortality\, memory\, identity and persecution from one of this country’s most talented writers. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nGary Barwin is a writer\, composer\, and multimedia artist\, and the author of 20 books of poetry\, fiction and books for children. His recent books include the short fiction collection I\, Dr Greenblatt\, Orthodontist\, 251-1457 and the poetry collections Moon Baboon Canoe and The Wild and Unfathomable Always. A PhD in music composition\, Barwin has been Writer-in-Residence at Western University and Young Voices eWriter-in-residence at the Toronto Public Library and has taught creative writing at a number of colleges and universities. SUMMARY:Torah Over Zoom: Passover Is Coming
DESCRIPTION:In just a few weeks we will be ushering in (our second COVID) Pesaḥ! \nFor many years\, the Rabbinical Assembly (the international association of Conservative/Masorti rabbis) has published a “Pesaḥ Guide” – the focus of which is the complicated laws and traditions of Kosher-for-Passover foods and their preparation. \nOn Tuesday\, March 16 at 7:00 p.m.\, please join us as we continue our weekly Torah study. This week we will continue to look at Pesaḥ issues\, using the RA’s “5781 (2021) Pesaḥ Guide” as a resource. You can download and view this year’s Guide by clicking here. Rabbi Karlin will also endeavour to answer all your Passover questions; please email them to him in advance at rabbi@theshaar.ca. \nJoin us for some enlightening learning by clicking on this Zoom link on Tuesday evening at 7:00.

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting will be Sunday\, February 21 at 12:30 pm\, in the comfort of your own home via Zoom!\nWe will be discussing Matti Friedman’s The Aleppo Codex.\nTo join the Zoom meeting  click here\nMeeting ID: 870 6802 4283\nPassword: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS\n\nWinner of the 2014 Sami Rohr Prize\nWinner of the American Library Association’s 2013 Sophie Brody Medal\nWinner of the 2013 Canadian Jewish Book Award for history\nOne of Booklist’s top ten religion books of the year\, 2013\nFinalist\, Religion Newswriters Association award for best religion book of 2013 \nA thousand years ago\, the most perfect copy of the Hebrew Bible was written. It was kept safe through one upheaval after another in the Middle East. By the 1940s it was housed in a dark grotto in Aleppo\, Syria\, and had become known around the world as the Aleppo Codex. \nMatti Friedman’s true-life detective story traces how this precious manuscript was smuggled from its hiding place in Syria into the newly founded state of Israel—and how and why many of its most sacred and valuable pages went missing. It’s a tale that involves secret agents\, pious clergymen\, obsessive antiquities collectors\, and highly placed national figures who\, as it turns out\, would do anything to get their hands on an ancient book. What it reveals are uncomfortable truths about greed\, state cover-ups\, and the fascinating role of historical treasures in creating a national identity. \nFriedman has unearthed documents kept secret for fifty years\, interviewed key players from around the world\, and followed the trail of the missing pages up to the present\, including the charged four-year court battle to determine the codex’s rightful owners. Friedman also takes us back in time\, revealing the once vibrant Jewish communities in Islamic lands. Epic in its sweep\, The Aleppo Codex features a fascinating cast of characters—all of whom claim the codex as their own. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nMatti Friedman\, a journalist and contributor to the New York Times Op-Ed Section\, is the author of two previous works of nonfiction. \nHis 2016 book Pumpkinflowers: A Soldier’s Story of a Forgotten War was chosen as a New York Times’ Notable Book and as one of Amazon’s 10 best books of the year. Pumpkinflowers was selected as one of the year’s best by Booklist\, Mother Jones\, Foreign Affairs\, the National Post\, and the Globe and Mail. It won the 2017 Vine Award for Canadian Jewish literature and the Canadian Jewish Literary Award for memoir\, and was shortlisted for the 2017 RBC Taylor Prize\, the Writer’s Trust Prize\, and the Yitzhak Sadeh Prize for military writing (Israel). Editions were published in the US\, Britain\, Canada\, Israel\, and China. \nMatti’s first book\, The Aleppo Codex\, an investigation into the strange fate of an ancient Bible manuscript\, won the 2014 Sami Rohr Prize\, the ALA’s Sophie Brody Medal\, and the Canadian Jewish Book Award for history. It was translated into seven languages. \nSpies of No Country\, the story of Israel’s first intelligence agents in 1948\, has received the 2018 Natan Book Award. \nA former Associated Press correspondent\, Matti’s work as a reporter has taken him from Israel to Lebanon\, Morocco\, Moscow\, the Caucasus\, and Washington\, DC\, and his writing has appeared in the Wall Street Journal\, the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, Tablet Magazine\, and elsewhere. Two essays he wrote about media coverage of Israel after the 2014 Gaza war\, for Tablet and The Atlantic\, triggered intense discussion and have been shared on Facebook more than 130\,000 times. \nHe was born in Toronto and lives in Jerusalem with his family. \n

SUMMARY:Torah Over Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Does One Need To Be Jewish To Be a Synaogue Member? \nOn Tuesday\, February 2 at 7:00 pm\, please join in as we continue our weekly Torah study. This week we will continue our study of some timely and pressing issues. \nA few years ago\, the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism began to discuss permitting non-Jews membership in our synagogues. In short order\, the umbrella group of Conservative/Masorti congregations passed a resolution allowing the practice. Although the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards has never considered the issue as one of halakhah\, it has provoked broad and animated discussion. \nJoin us as we consider the broader issue\, “What does synagogue membership mean?” by clicking on this Zoom link on Tuesday evening at 7:00. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Torah Over Zoom: Organ Donation (Part II)
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, January 26 at 7:00 pm\, please join in as we continue our weekly Torah study. This week we will continue our study of some timely and pressing issues. \nYou may be aware that the law governing organ and tissue donation has changed in NS on Sunday\, January 18. According to NS Provincial law\, we are now all potential organ donors\, having presumed consent\, unless we opt-out. \nWhat does Jewish tradition and law have to say about “presumed consent\,” and how should we respond as Jews? Join us for what will undoubtably be a lively discussion of the issue of “presumed consent” using Jewish sources. \n  \nYou may also find the materials from last week’s class on organ and tissue donation helpful and interesting as we move forward in this complex issue: for a responsum (position paper) of the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards of the Rabbinical Assembly by Rabbi Joseph Prouser\, click here; for Rabbi Prouser’s sample text of a “Donation Card\,” click here. \nTo participate\, click on this Zoom link on Tuesday evening.
