SUMMARY:Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We will be discussing Max Gross’s The Lost Shtetl \nJoin Zoom Meeting:\nClick here \nMeeting ID: 884 9888 0227\nPasscode: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS\n\nWinner of the National Jewish Book Award and the Jewish Fiction Award from the Association of Jewish Libraries \nWhat if there was a town that history missed? \nFor decades\, the tiny Jewish shtetl of Kreskol existed in happy isolation\, virtually untouched and unchanged. Spared by the Holocaust and the Cold War\, its residents enjoyed remarkable peace. It missed out on cars\, and electricity\, and the internet\, and indoor plumbing. But when a marriage dispute spins out of control\, the whole town comes crashing into the twenty-first century. \nPesha Lindauer\, who has just suffered an ugly\, acrimonious divorce\, suddenly disappears. A day later\, her husband goes after her\, setting off a panic among the town elders. They send a woefully unprepared outcast named Yankel Lewinkopf out into the wider world to alert the Polish authorities. \nVenturing beyond the remote safety of Kreskol\, Yankel is confronted by the beauty and the ravages of the modern-day outside world – and his reception is met with a confusing mix of disbelief\, condescension\, and unexpected kindness. When the truth eventually surfaces\, his story and the existence of Kreskol make headlines nationwide. \nReturning Yankel to Kreskol\, the Polish government plans to reintegrate the town that time forgot. Yet in doing so\, the devious origins of its disappearance come to the light. And what has become of the mystery of Pesha and her former husband? Divided between those embracing change and those clinging to its old world ways\, the people of Kreskol will have to find a way to come together . . .  or risk their village disappearing for good. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nMax Gross is a former staff writer for the New York Post and the Forward and is currently the Editor in Chief of the Commercial Observer. He lives in New York City with his wife and son. \n

SUMMARY:BOOK CLUB MEETING
DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting will be Sunday\, July 25 in the comfort of your own home via Zoom!\nWe will be discussing Adi Schwartz’s and Einat Wilf’s The War of Return \nJoin Zoom Meeting: Click here \nMeeting ID: 857 2451 5333\nPasscode: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS\n\nTwo prominent Israeli liberals argue that for the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians to end with peace\, Palestinians must come to terms with the fact that there will be no “right of return.” \nIn 1948\, seven hundred thousand Palestinians were forced out of their homes by the first Arab-Israeli War. More than seventy years later\, most of their houses are long gone\, but millions of their descendants are still registered as refugees\, with many living in refugee camps. This group―unlike countless others that were displaced in the aftermath of World War II and other conflicts―has remained unsettled\, demanding to settle in the state of Israel. Their belief in a “right of return” is one of the largest obstacles to successful diplomacy and lasting peace in the region. \nIn The War of Return\, Adi Schwartz and Einat Wilf―both liberal Israelis supportive of a two-state solution―reveal the origins of the idea of a right of return\, and explain how UNRWA – the very agency charged with finding a solution for the refugees – gave in to Palestinian\, Arab and international political pressure to create a permanent “refugee” problem. They argue that this Palestinian demand for a “right of return” has no legal or moral basis and make an impassioned plea for the US\, the UN\, and the EU to recognize this fact\, for the good of Israelis and Palestinians alike. \nA runaway bestseller in Israel\, the first English translation of The War of Return is certain to spark lively debate throughout America and abroad. \nABOUT THE AUTHORS \nADI SCHWARTZ is an Israeli researcher and author. His work focuses on the Arab-Israeli conflict and Israeli history and current affairs. \nEINAT WILF is a former Israeli politician who served as a member of Knesset for Independence and the Labor Party. She is one of Israel’s leading public intellectuals. \n

SUMMARY:Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting will be Sunday\, June 27 in the comfort of your own home via Zoom! \nWe will be discussing Alison Pick’s Between Gods: A Memoir. \nJoin Zoom Meeting: \nhttps://zoom.us/j/94680832340?pwd=NXk0eHl5RFozNEpldS95UEFlUEYvZz09  \nMeeting ID: 946 8083 2340 \nPassword: 1955\n\nSYNOPSIS\n\nAlison Pick was born in the 1970s and raised in a supportive\, loving family. She grew up laughing with her sister and cousins\, and doting on her grandparents. Then as a teenager\, Alison made a discovery that instantly changed her understanding of her family\, and her vision for her own life\, forever. She learned that her Pick grandparents\, who had escaped from the Czech Republic during WWII\, were Jewish–and that most of this side of the family had died in concentration camps. She also discovered that her own father had not known of this history until\, in his twenties\, he had a chance encounter with an old family friend–and then he\, too\, had kept the secret from Alison and her sister. \nIn her early thirties\, engaged to be married to her longtime boyfriend but struggling with a crippling depression\, Alison slowly but doggedly began to research and uncover her Jewish heritage. Eventually she came to realize that her true path forward was to reclaim her history and indentity as a Jew. But even then\, one seemingly insurmountable problem remained: her mother wasn’t Jewish\, so technically Alison wasn’t either. In this by times raw\, by times sublime memoir\, Alison recounts her struggle with the meaning of her faith\, her journey to convert to Judaism\, her battle with depression\, and her path towards facing and accepting the past and embracing the future–including starting a new family of her own. This is her unusual and gripping story\, told in crystalline prose and with all the nuance and drama of a novel\, but illuminated with heartbreaking insight into the very real lives of the dead\, and hard-won hope for the lives of all those who carry on after. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nAlison Pick was the 2002 winner of the Bronwen Wallace Award for the most promising young writer in Canada. She has published three acclaimed volumes of poetry\, and her first novel\, The Sweet Edge (2005)\, was a Globe and Mail “Best Book.” Her second novel\, the bestselling Far to Go (2010)\, was nominated for the Man Booker Prize\, won the Canadian Jewish Award for Fiction\, and was named a “Top Ten of 2010” book by the Toronto Star and NOW Magazine. It was also published internationally to acclaim. Her memoir\, Between Gods\, was also published internationally\, was a finalist for the BC National Award for Non-Fiction\, and was a Globe and Mail “Best Book” of 2014. The author lives in Toronto\, Ontario. \n

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:BOOK CLUB MEETING \nOur next meeting will be Sunday\, April 18 at 12:30 PM\, in the comfort of your own home via Zoom!\nWe will be discussing Naomi Lewis’s Tiny Lights for Travellers. \nJoin Zoom Meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82832241042?pwd=aVdoRkNBNHJsUnF4c2FTWTRURytYdz09https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82832241042?pwd=aVdoRkNBNHJsUnF4c2FTWTRURytYdz09\nMeeting ID: 828 3224 1042 Passcode: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS\n\nWhy couldn’t I occupy the world as those model-looking women did\, with their flowing hair\, pulling their tiny bright suitcases as if to say\, I just arrived from elsewhere\, and I already belong here\, and this sidewalk belongs to me? \nWhen her marriage suddenly ends\, and a diary documenting her beloved Opa’s escape from Nazi-occupied Netherlands in the summer of 1942 is discovered\, Naomi Lewis decides to retrace his journey to freedom. Travelling alone from Amsterdam to Lyon\, she discovers family secrets and her own narrative as a second-generation Jewish Canadian. With vulnerability\, humour\, and wisdom\, Lewis’s memoir asks tough questions about her identity as a secular Jew\, the accuracy of family stories\, and the impact of the Holocaust on subsequent generations. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nNaomi K. Lewis is the author of the novel Cricket in a Fist\, the short story collection I Know Who You Remind Me Of\, and the co-editor of the anthology Shy. Her memoir\, Tiny Lights for Travellers\, was a finalist for the 2019 Governor General’s Literary Award for Nonfiction. Her journalism has been shortlisted for provincial and national magazine awards\, and she has served as writer in residence at the University of New Brunswick and the Calgary Public Library. She lives in Calgary and sometimes Kelowna.

SUMMARY:Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting will be Sunday\, March 21 at 12:30 PM\, in the comfort of your own home via Zoom! \nWe will be discussing Gary Barwin’s Yiddish for Pirates. \nZoom Meeting Info\nJoin Zoom Meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82114898611?pwd=Y1pqYlpwdGNaeHpYM2RPM09WcmRFQT09\nMeeting ID: 821 1489 8611\nPassword: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS\n\nShortlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize \nNominated for the Governor-General’s Award for Literature \nSet in the years around 1492\, Yiddish for Pirates recounts the compelling story of Moishe\, a Bar Mitzvah boy who leaves home to join a ship’s crew\, where he meets Aaron\, the polyglot parrot who becomes his near-constant companion. \nFrom a present-day Florida nursing home\, this wisecracking yet poetic bird guides us through a world of pirate ships\, Yiddish jokes and treasure maps. But Inquisition Spain is a dangerous time to be Jewish and Moishe joins a band of hidden Jews trying to preserve some forbidden books. He falls in love with a young woman\, Sarah; though they are separated by circumstance\, Moishe’s wanderings are motivated as much by their connection as by his quest for loot and freedom. When all Jews are expelled from Spain\, Moishe travels to the Caribbean with the ambitious Christopher Columbus\, a self-made man who loves his creator. Moishe eventually becomes a pirate and seeks revenge on the Spanish while seeking the ultimate booty: the Fountain of Youth. \nThis outstanding New Face of Fiction is filled with Jewish takes on classic pirate tales–fights\, prison escapes\, and exploits on the high seas–but it’s also a tender love story\, between Moishe and Sarah\, and between Aaron and his “shoulder\,” Moishe. Rich with puns\, colourful language\, post-colonial satire and Kabbalistic hijinks\, Yiddish for Pirates is also a compelling examination of mortality\, memory\, identity and persecution from one of this country’s most talented writers. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nGary Barwin is a writer\, composer\, and multimedia artist\, and the author of 20 books of poetry\, fiction and books for children. His recent books include the short fiction collection I\, Dr Greenblatt\, Orthodontist\, 251-1457 and the poetry collections Moon Baboon Canoe and The Wild and Unfathomable Always. A PhD in music composition\, Barwin has been Writer-in-Residence at Western University and Young Voices eWriter-in-residence at the Toronto Public Library and has taught creative writing at a number of colleges and universities. Born in Northern Ireland to South African parents of Ashkenazi descent\, Barwin moved to Canada as a child. He is married with three adult children\, and lives in Hamilton\, Ontario.

SUMMARY:Torah Over Zoom: Passover Is Coming
DESCRIPTION:In just a few weeks we will be ushering in (our second COVID) Pesaḥ! \nFor many years\, the Rabbinical Assembly (the international association of Conservative/Masorti rabbis) has published a “Pesaḥ Guide” – the focus of which is the complicated laws and traditions of Kosher-for-Passover foods and their preparation. \nOn Tuesday\, March 16 at 7:00 p.m.\, please join us as we continue our weekly Torah study. This week we will continue to look at Pesaḥ issues\, using the RA’s “5781 (2021) Pesaḥ Guide” as a resource. You can download and view this year’s Guide by clicking here. Rabbi Karlin will also endeavour to answer all your Passover questions; please email them to him in advance at rabbi@theshaar.ca. \nJoin us for some enlightening learning by clicking on this Zoom link on Tuesday evening at 7:00.
