SUMMARY:Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting will be Sunday\, January 28 at 12:30pm in the comfort of your own home via Zoom!\nWe will be discussing Hila Blum’s: How to Love Your Daughter \nJoin Zoom Meeting  \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/81400199144?pwd=UjIsYs2L1fUEkxvA8H3uTGCHvppber.1 \nMeeting ID: 814 0019 9144\nPasscode: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS \n“A stone-cold masterwork of psychological tension. Its final pages had me holding my breath.” —Flynn Berry\, New York Times Book Review \nThe seemingly inexplicable estrangement between a woman and her grown daughter opens up a troubling question: What damage do we do in the blindness of love? \nThousands of miles from home\, a woman stands on a dark street\, peeking through well-lit windows at two little girls. They are the grandchildren she’s never met\, daughters of the daughter she has not seen in years. \nAt the center of this mesmerizing story is the woman’s quest to understand how a relationship that began in bliss—a mother besotted with her only child—arrived at a point of such unfathomable distance. Weaving back and forth in time\, she unravels memories and long-buried feelings\, retracing the infinite acts of parental care\, each so mundane and apparently benign\, that in ensemble may have undermined what she most treasured. With exquisite psychological precision\, Blum traces the seemingly insignificant missteps and deceptions of family life\, where it’s possible to cross the line between protectiveness and possession without even seeing it—and uncertain whether\, or how\, we can find our way back. \n  \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \n Hila Blum is the author of the Israeli bestsellers The Visit and How to Love Your Daughter\, which won the Sapir Prize. She is also a book editor. She lives in Jerusalem\, where she was born and raised.

SUMMARY:Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting will be Sunday\, November 26 at 12:30pm in the comfort of your own home via Zoom! \nWe will be discussing Paul Goldberg’s: The Dissident \nJoin Zoom Meeting  \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/87082818621?pwd=xkvm5aAr01lDjJuEemibGC1bA3Lv7h.1 \nMeeting ID: 870 8281 8621 \nPassword: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS \n“A feast for serious fiction readers.” —Wendy Smith\, The Washington Post\n“A dead-serious\, dead-funny\, no-he-didn’t marvel.” —Joshua Cohen\, author of The Netanyahus\nA thrilling\, witty\, and slyly original Cold War mystery about a ragtag group of Jewish refuseniks in Moscow. \nOn his wedding day in 1976\, Viktor Moroz stumbles upon a murder scene: two gay men\, one of them a U.S. official\, have been axed to death in Moscow. Viktor\, a Jewish refusenik\, is stuck in the Soviet Union because the government has denied his application to leave for Israel; he sits “in refusal” alongside his wife and their group of intellectuals\, Jewish and not. But the KGB spots Viktor leaving the murder scene. Plucked off the street\, he’s given a choice: find the murderer or become the suspect of convenience. His deadline is nine days later\, when Henry Kissinger will be arriving in Moscow. Unsolved ax murders\, it seems\, aren’t good for politics. \nA whip-smart\, often hilarious Cold War thriller\, Paul Goldberg’s The Dissident explores what it means to survive in the face of impossible choices and monumental consequences. To help solve the case\, Viktor ropes in his community\, which includes his banned-text-distributing wife\, a hard-drinking sculptor\, a Russian priest of Jewish heritage\, and a visiting American intent on reliving World War II heroics. As Viktor struggles to determine whom to trust\, he’s forced to question not only the KGB’s murky motives but also those of his fellow refuseniks—and the man he admires above all: Kissinger himself. \nImmersive\, unpredictable\, and always ax-sharp\, The Dissident is Cold War intrigue at its most inventive. It is an uncompromising look at sacrifice\, community\, and the scars of history and identity\, from an expert storyteller. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \n Paul Goldberg is the author of the novels The Yid\, which was a finalist for the Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature and the National Jewish Book Award’s Goldberg Prize for Debut Fiction\, and The Château. As a reporter\, Goldberg has written two books about the Soviet human rights movement\, and co-authored (with Otis Brawley) the book How We Do Harm\, an expose of the U.S. healthcare system. His writing has appeared in The Washington Post\, Slate\, The New York Times\, and elsewhere. He is also the editor and publisher of The Cancer Letter\, a publication focused on the business and politics of cancer. He lives in Washington\, D.C.

SUMMARY:BOOK CLUB MEETING
DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting will be Sunday\, October 29 at 12:30pm in the comfort of your own home via Zoom! \nWe will be discussing Dani Shapiro’s: Signal Fires \nJoin Zoom Meeting  \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/85651968568?pwd=Yc9U3WKyi0RaDeQ4kaXANdt75fX7Fs.1 \nMeeting ID: 856 5196 8568 \nPassword: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS \nNATIONAL BEST SELLER • From the beloved author of Inheritance: “a haunting\, moving\, and propulsive exploration of family secrets” (Meg Wolitzer\, author of The Interestings) \nTwo families. One night. A constellation of lives changed forever. \nA TIME Best Fiction Book of the Year • A Washington Post Notable Work of Fiction • A Real Simple Best Book of the Year \nAn ancient majestic oak stands beneath the stars on Division Street. And under the tree sits Ben Wilf\, a retired doctor\, and ten-year-old Waldo Shenkman\, a brilliant\, lonely boy who is pointing out his favorite constellations. Waldo doesn’t realize it but he and Ben have met before. And they will again\, and again. Across time and space\, and shared destiny. \nDivision Street is full of secrets. An impulsive lie begets a secret—one which will forever haunt the Wilf family. And the Shenkmans\, who move into the neighborhood many years later\, bring secrets of their own.. Spanning fifty kaleidoscopic years\, on a street—and in a galaxy—where stars collapse and stories collide\, these two families become bound in ways they never could have imagined. \nUrgent and compassionate\, Signal Fires is a magical story for our times\, a literary tour de force by a masterful storyteller at the height of her powers. A luminous meditation on family\, memory\, and the healing power of interconnectedness. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \n DANI SHAPIRO is the author of eleven books\, and the host and creator of the hit podcast Family Secrets. Her most recent novel\, Signal Fires\, was named a best book of 2022 by Time Magazine\, Washington Post\, Amazon\, and others\, and is a national bestseller. Her most recent memoir\, Inheritance\, was an instant New York Times Bestseller\, and named a best book of 2019 by Elle\, Vanity Fair\, Wired\, and Real Simple. DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting will be Sunday\, August 27 at 12:30pm in the comfort of your own home via Zoom!\nWe will be discussing Colum McCann’s: Apeirogon \nJoin Zoom Meeting  \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/81357982871?pwd=d1ovTmlaRDlhamgrYlV0QWFPTFd2QT09  \nMeeting ID: 813 5798 2871 \nPasscode: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS \nNEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A quite extraordinary novel. Colum McCann has found the form and voice to tell the most complex of stories\, with an unexpected friendship between two men at its powerfully beating heart.”—Kamila Shamsie\, author of Home Fire\n \nFINALIST FOR THE DUBLIN LITERARY AWARD • LONGLISTED FOR THE BOOKER PRIZE • WINNER OF THE NATIONAL JEWISH BOOK AWARD • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The Independent • The New York Public Library • Library Journal \nFrom the National Book Award–winning and bestselling author of Let the Great World Spin comes an epic novel rooted in the unlikely real-life friendship between two fathers. \nBassam Aramin is Palestinian. Rami Elhanan is Israeli. They inhabit a world of conflict that colors every aspect of their lives\, from the roads they are allowed to drive on to the schools their children attend to the checkpoints\, both physical and emotional\, they must negotiate. \nBut their lives\, however circumscribed\, are upended one after the other: first\, Rami’s thirteen-year-old daughter\, Smadar\, becomes the victim of suicide bombers; a decade later\, Bassam’s ten-year-old daughter\, Abir\, is killed by a rubber bullet. Rami and Bassam had been raised to hate one another. And yet\, when they learn of each other’s stories\, they recognize the loss that connects them. Together they attempt to use their grief as a weapon for peace—and with their one small act\, start to permeate what has for generations seemed an impermeable conflict. \nThis extraordinary novel is the fruit of a seed planted when the novelist Colum McCann met the real Bassam and Rami on a trip with the non-profit organization Narrative 4. McCann was moved by their willingness to share their stories with the world\, by their hope that if they could see themselves in one another\, perhaps others could too. \nWith their blessing\, and unprecedented access to their families\, lives\, and personal recollections\, McCann began to craft Apeirogon\, which uses their real-life stories to begin another—one that crosses centuries and continents\, stitching together time\, art\, history\, nature\, and politics in a tale both heartbreaking and hopeful. The result is an ambitious novel\, crafted out of a universe of fictional and nonfictional material\, with these fathers’ moving story at its heart. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \n Colum McCann is the internationally bestselling author of the novels TransAtlantic\, Let the Great World Spin\, Zoli\, Dancer\, This Side of Brightness\, and Songdogs\, as well as three critically acclaimed story collections and the nonfiction book Letters to a Young Writer. His fiction has been published in over forty languages. He has received many international honors\, including the National Book Award\, the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award\, a Guggenheim fellowship\, the Pushcart Prize\, and an Oscar nomination for his short film Everything in This Country Must. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, as well as the Irish association of artists Aosdána\, and he has also received a Chevalier des Artes et des Lettres award from the French government. In addition\, he has won awards in Italy\, Germany\, and China. A contributor to The New Yorker\, The New York Times\, The Atlantic\, and The Paris Review\, he teaches in the Hunter College MFA Creative Writing program. He lives with his family in New York City\, where he is the cofounder of the global nonprofit story exchange organization Narrative 4.

DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting will be Sunday\, July 23 at 12:30pm in the comfort of your own home via Zoom!\nWe will be discussing Nessa Rapoport’s: Evening \nJoin Zoom Meeting  \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/89549666703?pwd=THRmRUtLbnZiNTFGbHVSRXRWNzREZz09 \nMeeting ID: 895 4966 6703 \nPassword: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS \nTwo sisters\, lost youth\, and old obsessions—a “compassionate\, lyrical portrait of grief\, longing\, and love” that unfolds over the course of one day as a Jewish family sits shiva (Refinery29). \nBohemian New Yorker Eve returns to her Toronto hometown to mourn the death of her more successful sister in this award-winning novel that’s “like a darker\, sexier Little Women” (Forward). \nIn her 30s\, Eve is summoned home by her distraught family to mourn the premature death of her sister\, Tam—a return that becomes an unexpected encounter with the past. Eve bears the burden of a secret: Two weeks before Tam died\, Eve and Tam argued so vehemently that they did not speak again. Her sister was famous\, acclaimed for her career as a TV journalist and her devoted marriage. But Tam\, too\, had a secret\, revealed the day after the funeral\, one that inverts the story Eve has told herself since their childhood. In the aftermath\, Eve is forced to revise her version of her fractured family\, her sister’s accomplishments and vaunted marriage\, and her own impeded ambition in work and love. \nDay by day as the family sits shiva\, the stories unfold\, illuminating the past to shape the present. Evening explores the dissonant love between sisters\, the body in longing\, the pride we take in sustaining our illusions\, and the redemption that is possible only when they are dispelled. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \n ESSA RAPOPORT is the author of a novel\, Preparing for Sabbath\, and a collection of prose poems\, A Woman’s Book of Grieving. Her essays and stories have been published in the New York Times\, Los Angeles Times\, and Forward and have been widely anthologized. Her column\, “Inner Life\,” appears in The Jewish Week. She was awarded a grant by the Canada Council for the Arts for House on the River. \n

SUMMARY:Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting will be Sunday\, June 25 at 12:30pm in the comfort of your own home via Zoom! \nWe will be discussing Noa Tishby’s: Israel: A Simple Guide… \nJoin Zoom Meeting  \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/81974022812?pwd=KzFDYkVCK1Q1U0FUOGFMeUV1a2xEdz09 \nMeeting ID: 819 7402 2812\nPasscode: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS \nA “fascinating and very moving” (Aaron Sorkin\, award-winning screenwriter of The West Wing and The Social Network) chronological timeline spanning from Biblical times to today that explores one of the most interesting countries in the world—Israel. \nIsrael. The small strip of arid land is 5\,700 miles away but remains a hot-button issue and a thorny topic of debate. But while everyone seems to have a strong opinion about Israel\, how many people actually know the facts? \nHere to fill in the information gap is Israeli American Noa Tishby. But “this is not your Bubbie’s history book” (Bill Maher\, host of Real Time with Bill Maher). Instead\, offering a fresh\, 360-degree view\, Tishby brings her “passion\, humor\, and deep intimacy” (Yossi Klein Halevi\, New York Times bestselling author of Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor) to the subject\, creating an accessible and dynamic portrait of a tiny country of outsized relevance. Through bite-sized chunks of history and deeply personal stories\, Tishby chronicles her homeland’s evolution\, beginning in Biblical times and moving forward to cover everything from WWI to Israel’s creation to the disputes dividing the country today. Tackling popular misconceptions with an abundance of facts\, Tishby provides critical context around headline-generating controversies and offers a clear\, intimate account of the richly cultured country of Israel. \n  \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \n  \nActress\, producer\, writer\, and activist Noa Tishby was born and raised in Tel Aviv. She served two and a half years in the Israeli army before she landed a starring role on the nation’s highest-rated prime time drama Ramat Aviv Gimmel. She became a household name\, appearing in numerous TV shows\, films\, theater productions\, and national fashion campaigns\, before moving to Los Angeles\, where she sold the Israeli TV show In Treatment to HBO\, making history as the first Israeli television show to become an American series. She co-produced over 150 episodes\, which earned a Peabody Award and twelve Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. A passionate political activist\, Tishby founded the nonprofit “Act for Israel\,” Israel’s first online advocacy organization\, and has become widely known as Israel’s unofficial ambassador. \n

DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting will be Sunday\, May 28 at 12:30pm in the comfort of your own home via Zoom!\nWe will be discussing Jonathan Wilson’s: The Red Balcony \nJoin Zoom Meeting  \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/86037461913?pwd=ZUl3RTBZRWdod3hVbk5aaG41TEUzQT09  \nMeeting ID: 860 3746 1913 \nPasscode: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS \nBased on actual events\, a gripping novel of sex\, love\, history and justice in the tinderbox of British Mandatory Palestine\, by the acclaimed author of A Palestine Affair\n“The story of what is arguably Israel’s foundational murder trial—a tale of multiple identities and loyalties.” —Joshua Cohen\, Pulitzer-Prize-winning author of The Netanyahus\n“Pleases on several levels: as an adventure tale\, a star-crossed romance and a detailed period piece.” —The Wall Street Journal \nIt’s 1933\, and Ivor Castle\, Oxford-educated and Jewish\, arrives in Palestine to take up a position as assistant to the defense counsel in the trial of the two men accused of murdering Haim Arlosoroff\, a leader of the Jewish community in Palestine whose efforts to get Jews out of Hitler’s Germany and into Palestine may have been controversial enough to get him killed. \nWhile preparing for the trial\, Ivor\, an innocent to the politics of the case\, falls into bed and deeply in love with Tsiona\, a free-spirited artist who happened to sketch the accused men in a Jerusalem café on the night of the murder and may be a key witness. As Ivor learns the hard way about the violence simmering just beneath the surface of British colonial rule\, Jonathan Wilson dazzles with his mastery of the sun-drenched landscape and the subtleties of the warring agendas among the Jews\, Arabs\, and British. \nAnd as he travels between the crime scene in Tel Aviv and the mazelike streets of Jerusalem\, between the mounting mysteries surrounding this notorious case and clandestine lovemaking in Tsiona’s studio\, Ivor must discover where his heart lies: whether he cares more for the law or the truth\, whether he is more an Englishman or a Jew\, and where and with whom he truly belongs. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \n JONATHAN WILSON is the author of eight previous books\, including the novels The Hiding Room (a finalist for the Jewish Quarterly-Wingate Prize) and A Palestine Affair (a New York Times Notable Book and National Jewish Book Award finalist); two short story collections\, Schoom and An Ambulance Is on the Way; and the soccer memoir Kick and Run. He lives in Newton\, Massachusetts.
