SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:BOOK CLUB MEETING \nOur next meeting will be Sunday\, April 28 at 12:30pm in the comfort of your own home via Zoom!\nWe will be discussing Mary Morris’: Gateway to the Moon \nJoin Zoom Meeting  \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/89536988748?pwd=e2b10a50xIUxOQua2wQWxJ9kLDWWeK.1 \nMeeting ID: 895 3698 8748 \nPasscode: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS \nIn 1492\, the Jewish and Muslim populations of Spain were expelled\, and Columbus set sail for America. Luis de Torres\, a Spanish Jew\, accompanies Columbus as his interpreter. His journey is only the beginning of a long migration\, across many generations. Over the centuries\, de Torres’ descendants travel from Spain and Portugal to Mexico\, finally settling in the hills of New Mexico. Five hundred years later\, it is in these same hills that Miguel Torres\, a young amateur astronomer\, finds himself trying to understand the mystery that surrounds him and the town he grew up in. \nEntrada de la Luna is a place that holds a profound secret–one that its residents cannot even imagine. It is also a place that ambitious children\, such as Miguel\, try to leave. Poor health\, broken marriages\, and poverty are the norm. Luck is unusual. When Miguel sees a flyer for a babysitting job\, he jumps at the opportunity\, and begins work for a Jewish family new to the area. Rachel Rothstein is not the sort of parent Miguel expected. A frustrated artist\, Rachel moved her family from New York in search of a fresh start\, but so far New Mexico has not solved any of the problems she brought with her. Miguel loves the work\, yet he is surprised to find many of the Rothstein family’s customs similar to ones he’s grown up with and never understood. \nInterwoven throughout the present-day narrative are the powerful stories of the ancestors of Entrada’s residents\, highlighting the torture\, pursuit\, and resistance of the Jewish people. A beautiful novel of shared history\, Gateway to the Moon is a moving and memorable portrait of a family and its journey through the centuries. \n  \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \n Born in Chicago in l947\, Mary Morris moved East to go to college. Though she never returned to the Middle West\, she often writes about the region and its tug. Morris likes the fact that there is more magnetisim around the shores of Lake Michigan than the North Pole. She feels drawn there and feel an affinity for Midwestern writers such as Willa Cather and Mark Twain who wrote their stories of the Middle West from afar. In her first collection of short stories\, Vanishing Animals & Other Stories\, awarded the Rome Prize in Literature from the American Academy and Institute of Arts & Letters\, Morris writes about childhood and adolescent memories. The Chicago Tribune called Morris “a marvelous storyteller-a budding Isaac Bashevis Singer\, a young Doris Lessing\, a talent to be watched and read”.

SUMMARY:Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting will be Sunday\, March 31 at 12:30pm in the comfort of your own home via Zoom!\nWe will be discussing Andrew Ridker’s: Hope: A Novel \nJoin Zoom Meeting  \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/86846990506?pwd=0rRu9hS6BaUSeiQwJW1FbzsM3O6DMx.1 \nMeeting ID: 868 4699 0506\nPasscode: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS \nA New York Times Editors’ Choice \nA Boston Globe\, Forward\, and Times of Israel Best Book of the Year\n“Riotous. . . . Hilarious . . . impeccably written . . . . Intelligent\, bighearted\, spew-your-gefilte-fish-funny.” —The New York Times Book Review \n“A writer with this much talent can take his readers anywhere.” —The Washington Post \n“Painfully funny. . . . This rivals Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s Fleishman is in Trouble in its pitch-perfect portrayal of Jewish American life.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) \n“A comedy of (bad) manners. . . . Engaging.” —The Boston Globe \nA hilarious and heartfelt novel about a seemingly perfect family in an era of waning American optimism\, from the acclaimed author of The Altruists \nThe year is 2013 and the Greenspans are the envy of Brookline\, Massachusetts\, an idyllic (and idealistic) suburb west of Boston. Scott Greenspan is a successful physician with his own cardiology practice. His wife\, Deb\, is a pillar of the community who spends her free time helping resettle refugees. Their daughter\, Maya\, works at a distinguished New York publishing house and their son\, Gideon\, is preparing to follow in his father’s footsteps. They are an exceptional family from an exceptional place\, living in exceptional times. \nBut when Scott is caught falsifying blood samples at work\, he sets in motion a series of scandals that threatens to shatter his family. Deb leaves him for a female power broker; Maya rekindles a hazardous affair from her youth; and Gideon drops out of college to go on a dangerous journey that will put his principles to the test. \nFrom Brookline to Berlin to the battlefields of Syria\, Hope follows the Greenspans over the course of one tumultuous year as they question\, and compromise\, the values that have shaped their lives. But in the midst of their disillusionment\, they’ll discover their own capacity for resilience\, connection\, and\, ultimately\, hope. \n  \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nAndrew Ridker’s debut novel\, The Altruists\, was a New York Times Editors’ Choice\, a Paris Review Staff Pick\, and a People Book of the Week. It was translated into more than a dozen languages. He is the editor of Privacy Policy: The Anthology of Surveillance Poetics and his writing has appeared in The New York Times\, Esquire\, Le Monde\, and Bookforum\, among other publications. He is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.

SUMMARY:Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting will be Sunday\, February 25 at 12:30pm in the comfort of your own home via Zoom! \nWe will be discussing Sara Bernstein’s: Study for Obedience \nJoin Zoom Meeting  \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/87177831965?pwd=faE3FutHavfWQOfmtRQJwUWuCkmbgW.1 \nMeeting ID: 871 7783 1965\nPasscode: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS \nWINNER OF THE 2023 SCOTIABANK GILLER PRIZE\nShortlisted for the 2023 Booker Prize\nIncluded in Granta’s Best of Young British Novelists 2023 \nFor readers of Shirley Jackson\, Iain Reid\, and Claire-Louise Bennett\, a haunting\, compressed masterwork from an extraordinary new voice in Canadian fiction. \nA young woman moves from the place of her birth to the remote northern country of her forebears to be housekeeper to her brother\, whose wife has recently left him. \nSoon after her arrival\, a series of inexplicable events occurs – collective bovine hysteria; the demise of a ewe and her nearly born lamb; a local dog’s phantom pregnancy; a potato blight. She notices that the local suspicion about incomers in general seems to be directed with some intensity at her and she senses a mounting threat that lies ‘just beyond the garden gate.’ And as she feels the hostility growing\, pressing at the edges of her brother’s property\, she fears that\, should the rumblings in the town gather themselves into a more defined shape\, who knows what might happen\, what one might be capable of doing. \nWith a sharp\, lyrical voice\, Sarah Bernstein powerfully explores questions of complicity and power\, displacement and inheritance. Study for Obedience is a finely tuned\, unsettling novel that confirms Bernstein as one of the most exciting voices of her generation. \n  \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \n Sarah Bernstein is from Montreal\, Canada\, and lives in Scotland. Her writing has appeared in Granta among other publications. Her first novel\, The Coming Bad Days\, was published in 2021. In 2023 she was named as one of Granta’s Best of Young British Novelists.

SUMMARY:Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting will be Sunday\, January 28 at 12:30pm in the comfort of your own home via Zoom!\nWe will be discussing Hila Blum’s: How to Love Your Daughter \nJoin Zoom Meeting  \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/81400199144?pwd=UjIsYs2L1fUEkxvA8H3uTGCHvppber.1 \nMeeting ID: 814 0019 9144\nPasscode: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS \n“A stone-cold masterwork of psychological tension. Its final pages had me holding my breath.” —Flynn Berry\, New York Times Book Review \nThe seemingly inexplicable estrangement between a woman and her grown daughter opens up a troubling question: What damage do we do in the blindness of love? \nThousands of miles from home\, a woman stands on a dark street\, peeking through well-lit windows at two little girls. They are the grandchildren she’s never met\, daughters of the daughter she has not seen in years. \nAt the center of this mesmerizing story is the woman’s quest to understand how a relationship that began in bliss—a mother besotted with her only child—arrived at a point of such unfathomable distance. Weaving back and forth in time\, she unravels memories and long-buried feelings\, retracing the infinite acts of parental care\, each so mundane and apparently benign\, that in ensemble may have undermined what she most treasured. With exquisite psychological precision\, Blum traces the seemingly insignificant missteps and deceptions of family life\, where it’s possible to cross the line between protectiveness and possession without even seeing it—and uncertain whether\, or how\, we can find our way back. \n  \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \n Hila Blum is the author of the Israeli bestsellers The Visit and How to Love Your Daughter\, which won the Sapir Prize. She is also a book editor. She lives in Jerusalem\, where she was born and raised.

SUMMARY:Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting will be Sunday\, November 26 at 12:30pm in the comfort of your own home via Zoom! \nWe will be discussing Paul Goldberg’s: The Dissident \nJoin Zoom Meeting  \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/87082818621?pwd=xkvm5aAr01lDjJuEemibGC1bA3Lv7h.1 \nMeeting ID: 870 8281 8621 \nPassword: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS \n“A feast for serious fiction readers.” —Wendy Smith\, The Washington Post\n“A dead-serious\, dead-funny\, no-he-didn’t marvel.” —Joshua Cohen\, author of The Netanyahus\nA thrilling\, witty\, and slyly original Cold War mystery about a ragtag group of Jewish refuseniks in Moscow. \nOn his wedding day in 1976\, Viktor Moroz stumbles upon a murder scene: two gay men\, one of them a U.S. official\, have been axed to death in Moscow. Viktor\, a Jewish refusenik\, is stuck in the Soviet Union because the government has denied his application to leave for Israel; he sits “in refusal” alongside his wife and their group of intellectuals\, Jewish and not. But the KGB spots Viktor leaving the murder scene. Plucked off the street\, he’s given a choice: find the murderer or become the suspect of convenience. His deadline is nine days later\, when Henry Kissinger will be arriving in Moscow. Unsolved ax murders\, it seems\, aren’t good for politics. \nA whip-smart\, often hilarious Cold War thriller\, Paul Goldberg’s The Dissident explores what it means to survive in the face of impossible choices and monumental consequences. To help solve the case\, Viktor ropes in his community\, which includes his banned-text-distributing wife\, a hard-drinking sculptor\, a Russian priest of Jewish heritage\, and a visiting American intent on reliving World War II heroics. As Viktor struggles to determine whom to trust\, he’s forced to question not only the KGB’s murky motives but also those of his fellow refuseniks—and the man he admires above all: Kissinger himself. \nImmersive\, unpredictable\, and always ax-sharp\, The Dissident is Cold War intrigue at its most inventive. It is an uncompromising look at sacrifice\, community\, and the scars of history and identity\, from an expert storyteller. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \n Paul Goldberg is the author of the novels The Yid\, which was a finalist for the Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature and the National Jewish Book Award’s Goldberg Prize for Debut Fiction\, and The Château. As a reporter\, Goldberg has written two books about the Soviet human rights movement\, and co-authored (with Otis Brawley) the book How We Do Harm\, an expose of the U.S. healthcare system. His writing has appeared in The Washington Post\, Slate\, The New York Times\, and elsewhere. He is also the editor and publisher of The Cancer Letter\, a publication focused on the business and politics of cancer. He lives in Washington\, D.C.
