SUMMARY:Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting will be Sunday\, July 28 at 12:30pm in the comfort of your own home via Zoom! \nWe will be discussing Lihi Lapid’s: On Her Own \n  \nJoin Zoom Meeting  \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/81960058117?pwd=JblegC4PLbp1eNWxwSYGTQdaq9bYn8.1 \nMeeting ID: 819 6005 8117 \nPasscode: 1955 \n  \nSYNOPSIS \nA moving\, page-turning story of two families in crisis and the unexpected places from which love can grow. \n“The true mystery Lapid seeks to unveil is one of the most burning questions of our time: What does it mean to be a woman in today’s world? On Her Own is a book you will want all the women in your life to read.” —Ayelet Gundar-Goshen\, award-winning author of Waking Lions \nNina\, a teenage runaway\, wakes up in the unfamiliar stairwell of a Tel Aviv apartment in a torn minidress. As her memory starts to resurface—the abusive older man she’s running away from\, the crime she witnessed—she knows one thing: she needs to find a place to hide. \nWhen one of the building’s tenants\, Carmela\, a lonely old widow suffering from memory loss\, mistakes Nina for her granddaughter she hasn’t seen in years\, Nina jumps at the opportunity for a safe haven. Soon\, the two strangers become each other’s lifeline as Nina settles into the apartment with sweet\, reassuring Carmela. \nMeanwhile\, Irina\, a Russian immigrant\, is living a parent’s worst nightmare: her only daughter has gone missing. She knows Nina got involved with the wrong men and will do anything to find her. Across the ocean\, Itamar feels that something is happening to his mom\, Carmela. The guilt over having left Israel for his pursuit of the American dream stirs childhood memories in him and a longing for the family that once was complete. \nSet between the eve of Passover and Israel’s Independence Day\, On Her Own is a tense and immersive psychological read about two families looking for redemption and the transformative bonds between strangers. \nTranslated from the Hebrew by Sondra Silverston. \n  \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \n  \nLihi Lapid is a bestselling Israeli author\, photojournalist\, columnist\, and activist with a finger on the pulse of contemporary women’s issues. She lives in Tel Aviv with her husband\, Yair Lapid\, the former prime minister of Israel\, and their two children.

DESCRIPTION:BOOK CLUB MEETING \nOur next meeting will be Sunday\, May 26 at 12:30pm in the comfort of your own home via Zoom!\nWe will be discussing Noa Yedlin’s: Stockholm \nJoin Zoom Meeting  \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/82103375550?pwd=akp9BbjQGBxTkqYGbMHaHbDmcHIksq.1 \nMeeting ID: 821 0337 5550 \nPasscode: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS \n“Hilarious\, refreshing\, tightly plotted\, and vividly written. An irresistible read.”—Jonas Jonasson\, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window And Disappeared \n“A seriously funny take on death and dying.” —Kirkus Reviews\, starred review \nAn ingeniously plotted dark comedy by Noa Yedlin\, “a master at tone” (Kirkus Reviews\, starred review) about aging and friendship following a tight-knit circle of seniors as they attempt to hide the death of one of their best friends so he can win the Nobel Prize for Economics. \nAvishay is up for the Nobel Prize for Economics. There’s just one problem—he’s dead. His four closest friends agree that the well-earned prize must stay within his grasp\, and so conspire to conceal Avishay’s corpse until the committee’s announcement. The potential of a glorious legacy for their late friend – and by extension\, for them all – is only a mere eight days away. What could go wrong? \nEach member of the quartet has their own motive for the scheme. Zohara\, Avishay’s longtime secret lover\, needs her widowhood acknowledged through an inheritance. Amos\, a less successful academic than his late friend\, is proving he can overcome his jealousy. Insecure magnate Yehuda needs the association to promote his own upcoming book. And Nili\, a divorcee chafing against her grandmotherly expectations\, thrills at the adventure. \nTheir plan starts out simple: turn up the AC\, take shifts watching the apartment\, forge texts and emails on the deceased’s behalf. But as the days pass\, they are confronted with surprise visitors\, hidden motives\, deep-seated resentments and the devices of nature herself. How far will this foursome go to help their friend die a winner? \nPacked into a drama-filled week\, bristling with insight and dark humor\, Stockholm offers a refreshingly honest consideration of the age when we begin to measure the sum of our lives. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \n Noa Yedlin is a bestselling Israeli author\, the recipient of the Sapir Prize and the Prime Minister’s Prize for Hebrew Literary Works. Yedlin is also the creator of an award-winning television series based on the original edition of Stockholm\, which was published in Israel in 2016.

DESCRIPTION:BOOK CLUB MEETING \nOur next meeting will be Sunday\, April 28 at 12:30pm in the comfort of your own home via Zoom!\nWe will be discussing Mary Morris’: Gateway to the Moon \nJoin Zoom Meeting  \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/89536988748?pwd=e2b10a50xIUxOQua2wQWxJ9kLDWWeK.1 \nMeeting ID: 895 3698 8748 \nPasscode: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS \nIn 1492\, the Jewish and Muslim populations of Spain were expelled\, and Columbus set sail for America. Luis de Torres\, a Spanish Jew\, accompanies Columbus as his interpreter. His journey is only the beginning of a long migration\, across many generations. Over the centuries\, de Torres’ descendants travel from Spain and Portugal to Mexico\, finally settling in the hills of New Mexico. Five hundred years later\, it is in these same hills that Miguel Torres\, a young amateur astronomer\, finds himself trying to understand the mystery that surrounds him and the town he grew up in. \nEntrada de la Luna is a place that holds a profound secret–one that its residents cannot even imagine. It is also a place that ambitious children\, such as Miguel\, try to leave. Poor health\, broken marriages\, and poverty are the norm. Luck is unusual. When Miguel sees a flyer for a babysitting job\, he jumps at the opportunity\, and begins work for a Jewish family new to the area. Rachel Rothstein is not the sort of parent Miguel expected. A frustrated artist\, Rachel moved her family from New York in search of a fresh start\, but so far New Mexico has not solved any of the problems she brought with her. Miguel loves the work\, yet he is surprised to find many of the Rothstein family’s customs similar to ones he’s grown up with and never understood. \nInterwoven throughout the present-day narrative are the powerful stories of the ancestors of Entrada’s residents\, highlighting the torture\, pursuit\, and resistance of the Jewish people. A beautiful novel of shared history\, Gateway to the Moon is a moving and memorable portrait of a family and its journey through the centuries. \n  \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \n Born in Chicago in l947\, Mary Morris moved East to go to college. Though she never returned to the Middle West\, she often writes about the region and its tug. Morris likes the fact that there is more magnetisim around the shores of Lake Michigan than the North Pole. She feels drawn there and feel an affinity for Midwestern writers such as Willa Cather and Mark Twain who wrote their stories of the Middle West from afar. In her first collection of short stories\, Vanishing Animals & Other Stories\, awarded the Rome Prize in Literature from the American Academy and Institute of Arts & Letters\, Morris writes about childhood and adolescent memories. The Chicago Tribune called Morris “a marvelous storyteller-a budding Isaac Bashevis Singer\, a young Doris Lessing\, a talent to be watched and read”.

DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting will be Sunday\, March 31 at 12:30pm in the comfort of your own home via Zoom!\nWe will be discussing Andrew Ridker’s: Hope: A Novel \nJoin Zoom Meeting  \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/86846990506?pwd=0rRu9hS6BaUSeiQwJW1FbzsM3O6DMx.1 \nMeeting ID: 868 4699 0506\nPasscode: 1955 \nSYNOPSIS \nA New York Times Editors’ Choice \nA Boston Globe\, Forward\, and Times of Israel Best Book of the Year\n“Riotous. . . . Hilarious . . . impeccably written . . . . Intelligent\, bighearted\, spew-your-gefilte-fish-funny.” —The New York Times Book Review \n“A writer with this much talent can take his readers anywhere.” —The Washington Post \n“Painfully funny. . . . This rivals Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s Fleishman is in Trouble in its pitch-perfect portrayal of Jewish American life.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) \n“A comedy of (bad) manners. . . . Engaging.” —The Boston Globe \nA hilarious and heartfelt novel about a seemingly perfect family in an era of waning American optimism\, from the acclaimed author of The Altruists \nThe year is 2013 and the Greenspans are the envy of Brookline\, Massachusetts\, an idyllic (and idealistic) suburb west of Boston. Scott Greenspan is a successful physician with his own cardiology practice. His wife\, Deb\, is a pillar of the community who spends her free time helping resettle refugees. Their daughter\, Maya\, works at a distinguished New York publishing house and their son\, Gideon\, is preparing to follow in his father’s footsteps. They are an exceptional family from an exceptional place\, living in exceptional times. \nBut when Scott is caught falsifying blood samples at work\, he sets in motion a series of scandals that threatens to shatter his family. Deb leaves him for a female power broker; Maya rekindles a hazardous affair from her youth; and Gideon drops out of college to go on a dangerous journey that will put his principles to the test. \nFrom Brookline to Berlin to the battlefields of Syria\, Hope follows the Greenspans over the course of one tumultuous year as they question\, and compromise\, the values that have shaped their lives. But in the midst of their disillusionment\, they’ll discover their own capacity for resilience\, connection\, and\, ultimately\, hope. \n  \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nAndrew Ridker’s debut novel\, The Altruists\, was a New York Times Editors’ Choice\, a Paris Review Staff Pick\, and a People Book of the Week. It was translated into more than a dozen languages. He is the editor of Privacy Policy: The Anthology of Surveillance Poetics and his writing has appeared in The New York Times\, Esquire\, Le Monde\, and Bookforum\, among other publications. He is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.
