SUMMARY:NaKh and Nosh: Bible Beyond the Torah
DESCRIPTION:Although Jews are the people of the book\, there are many parts of the Jewish bible\, the TaNaKh\, we never read in services. The word TaNaKh is an acronym for the Jewish bible’s 3 categories of books: the Torah (the five books of Moses)\, Nevi’im (the Prophets)\, and Ketuvim (the Scriptures). Over the course of the Jewish year\, we read the full Torah\, but we never read the full books of NaKh (Nevi’im and Ketuvim).\nBut that has changed at Shaar Shalom!\nEach session\, we study one more chapter of NaKh: discovering why these words were so sacred to our ancestors\, and why so few Jews read them (outside of Halifax\, that is). Find Rabbi Rank’s table at kiddush for a little “NaKh and Nosh.”

SUMMARY:Dr. Saul Green Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Dr. Saul Green Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Dr. Bertha Fuchsman-Small. \nDr. Bertha Fuchsman-Small obtained a BA in History from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania and a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Rochester. She is currently a family physician as well as an assistant professor with McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Fuchsman-Small has spent much of her career in Montreal offering support to ethnically diverse populations\, many of whom are new Canadians. She also worked in northern communities of Ontario and Quebec\, namely in the Cree community of Waskaganish and in the James Bay area\, as well as in rural Queensland\, Australia. Dr. Fuchsman-Small—physician\, humanitarian\, and activist—spent fifteen months in the Democratic Republic of Congo with Médecins Sans Frontières. \nMÉDECINS SANS FRONTIÈRES: MEDICAL HUMANITARIAN ACTIVISM AND THE TENSION BETWEEN PRINCIPLE AND PRAGMATISM\nIn her lecture\, Dr. Fuchsman-Small will discuss how Médecins Sans Frontières uses its declared principles and evolving sense of its institutional role to address issues such as: when and where to intervene and to pull out; when to speak out and to whom; and how to balance integrity with cultural flexibility. \nDr. Saul Green was a graduate of Dalhousie University’s Medical School. He was a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Canada as well as the American College of Surgeons. A founding member of the Shaar Shalom Synagogue\, Dr Green cared deeply about the relationship between Judaism\, medicine\, and humanitarianism. \nShaar Shalom Synagogue is a conservative congregation providing egalitarian religious services\, and educational and cultural programs that enhance Judaism for its individuals\, its families and its community. Shaar Shalom is committed to learning\, fellowship and community. \nFounded in 1789\, the University of King’s College is Canada’s oldest chartered university. A small and extraordinarily lively academic community\, King’s is known nationally and internationally for its highly acclaimed interdisciplinary programs in the humanities and journalism.

SUMMARY:Unpacking: Holocaust Survivors Making Montreal Home Post World War II
DESCRIPTION:Seventy years ago\, in 1947\, Canada reluctantly opened its doors to displaced persons (DP) living in Europe. Between 1947 and March 1950\, Canada granted admission to over 98\,000 DPs. Only 11\,064\, or 11.3%\, were Jews – Holocaust survivors. Once in Canada\, 55% of survivors went to Montreal\, 35% to Toronto; and 10% to the rest of Canada.\nThe research of Dr. Zelda Abramson\, sociologist at Acadia University\, traced the lived experiences of Holocaust survivors who settled in Montreal\, drawing on more than 70 interviews\, hundreds of social service case files\, and archival documents.\nThe evening will present several dramatic readings that capture the challenges and successes the survivors faced integrating into Montreal and Canadian life. \nThere is no cost for this event. \nContact: zelda.abramson@acadiau.ca  |  902-585-1273

SUMMARY:Atlantic Jewish Film Festival Closing Film - "Keep Quiet"
DESCRIPTION:Hungarian and English with English subtitles\, Documentary\, with special guests\, Richard Marceau and Christine Hanson \nDirectors: Sam Blair\, Joseph Martin\nProducers: Alex Holder\, Danielle Clark\, Nicole Stott\nCAST: Csanad Szeged\nDistributor: Kino Lorber\nCountry: UK\, Hungary     Year: 2016     Running Time: 92 minutes\nAs vice-president of Hungary’s far-right extremist party\, Csanad Szegedi espoused anti-Semitic rhetoric and Holocaust denials\, and founded the Hungarian Guard\, a now-banned militia inspired by a pro-Nazi group complicit in the murder of thousands of Jews during WWII. But his life was soon upended when Szegedi’s maternal grandparents were revealed to be Jewish and his beloved grandmother an Auschwitz survivor who had hidden her faith\, fearing further persecution. Keep Quiet depicts Szegedi’s three-year journey to embrace his newfound religion. But is his transformation genuine? Or does he simply have nowhere else to turn? \n

SUMMARY:Atlantic Jewish Film Festival - "Carvalho's Journey"
DESCRIPTION:English\, Documentary\, with special guest\, Adrian Fish \nDirector / Producer / Writer: Steve Rivo    Narrator: Michael Stuhlbarg\nDistributor: The National Center for Jewish Film\nCountry: USA    Year: 2015     Running Time: 85 minutes\nA real-life 19th century American western adventure story about Solomon Nunes Carvalho\, an observant Sephardic Jew born in 1815 in Charleston\, South Carolina. In 1853\, traveling with John Fremont’s 5th Westward Expedition\, Carvalho became one of the first photographers to document the sweeping vistas and treacherous terrain of the far American West. Living alongside mountain men\, Native Americans\, and Mormons\, Carvalho overcame enormous odds to produce beautiful art: daguerreotypes that became the lens through which the world experienced the West. \nIn partnership with Photopolis: The Halifax Festival of Photography

Her love of music has always been a part of her life and practice as a visual artist and illustrating David Yang’s score and story was a special pleasure. \nRAZZMATAZZ FOR KIDS \n \nSandy Greenberg and Thomas Cormier of Razzmatazz for Kids will get you hugging someone you love\, clucking like a chicken\, riding a bumpy bus\, singing\, hopping\, dancing\, clapping your hands\, or performing on stage with them at their fun children’s concert of both well-known and original songs. They have been delighting young audiences for over 20 years at festivals\, special events\, and schools. Sesame Street made a music video of their song\, “Going to my Grandma’s”. Razzmatazz for Kids was invited to perform for the First Ladies of the United States and Canada at the National Library in Ottawa\, and has been a featured performer with Symphony Nova Scotia.

SUMMARY:Atlantic Jewish Film Festival - Short Program
DESCRIPTION:Bring your lunch to the Short Program! Special guest\, Stephen Cooke\, will be in attendance at the Short Program. \nWOMEN IN SINK \n \nHebrew with English subtitles \nDirector/Producer: Iris Zaki\nDistributor: Go2Films\nCountry: UK\, Israel   Year: 2015  Running Time: 36 minutes\nThe Jewish director of this film installed a camera over the hair washing basin in a small salon owned by a Christian Arab woman in Haifa\, Israel. As she washes their hair\, she talks with the clients\, both Jews and Arabs\, posing questions about life in Israel. What emerges from these conversations is an honest and nuanced portrait of contemporary Israel. \nTHE CHOP \n \nEnglish \nDirector: Lewis Rose\nProducer: Daphne Hocguard\nCAST Amir Boutrous\, Andy Linden\, Daniel Kramer\, Sajid Varda\nDistributor: Salaud Morisset\nCountry: UK    Year: 2015   Running Time: 17 minutes\nYossi\, a charismatic Kosher butcher with lightning quick knife-wielding skills\, angers his boss and loses his job. He does the rounds of other kosher butchers to no avail so decides to disguise himself as Muslim in order to find work at a Halal butcher shop. While this short film is a comedy incorporating “fish out of water” and laugh-out-loud slapstick humour\, it’s also a story that explores the relationship between Jews and Muslims. \nA CANTOR ON TRIAL \n \nYiddish with English Subtitles \nDirector/Producer: Sidney M. Goldin\nCAST: Louis “Leibele” Waldman\nMusic by Sholem Secunda\nDistributor: The National Center for Jewish Film\nCountry: USA   Year: 1931   Running Time: 10 minutes\nIn this hilarious musical comedy gem\, legendary cantor Leibele Waldman plays all three candidates auditioning for a synagogue committee in search of a High Holidays cantor. Displeased\nwith the first two applicants\, a Galitzianer and a Daytsher (German)\, the committee finds its man: a modern chazan with “pep and jazz” who does Kol Nidre with a “two-step.” \nCanada Premiere of New Digital Restoration & new English subtitles by The National Center for Jewish Film \nJOE’S VIOLIN \n \nEnglish \nDirector: Kahane Cooperman\nProducers:  Kahane Cooperman\, Raphaela Neihausen\nCAST: Joe Feingold\, Brianna Perez\nDistributor: Go2Films\nCountry: USA    Year 2016    Running Time: 24 minutes\nIn this award winning documentary short\, a 91 year old Holocaust survivor donates the violin he’s owned for 70 years to a local instrument drive\, changing the life of a 12 year old girl from one of America’s poorest districts and\, unexpectedly\, his own. When the women’s balcony in an Orthodox synagogue collapses\, leaving the rabbi’s wife in a coma and the rabbi in shock\, the congregation falls into crisis.
