SUMMARY:Kadimah Celebrates 75 years!
DESCRIPTION:WOW!   75 years. Just like that!   Camp Kadimah is preparing to celebrate this milestone anniversary in 2018. \nA strong and enthusiastic committee of Kadimah veterans has arranged an exciting program to bring back memories of the glorious summers we spent at Lake William – in sports\, arts and crafts\, song and dance\, drama\, swimming\, boating – you name it\, we did it (even a bit of canoodling) and today are much stronger from the experience.\nJoin with friends made through the years at a gala celebration July 27-28\, 2018 in Halifax and July 29 at Camp Kadimah for a very special Visiting Day.\nWe’ll have a traditional Friday night dinner and Oneg Shabbat featuring Israeli singing and dancing. Saturday evening will be a more relaxed dinner along with a trip down memory lane with a digital presentation that covers the whole 75 years\, with lots of surprises\, and a social featuring a great Halifax band.\nSunday\, Visiting Day at Camp Kadimah will feature an amazing walk down memory lane and old and current favorites served from the kitchen.\nKadimah played such an important role in all our lives\, it is imperative you be with us to remember the glory years with friends and family.\nThere is registration information on our newly-established website: www.kadimah75.com

SUMMARY:NaKh and Nosh: Bible Beyond the Torah
DESCRIPTION:Although Jews are the people of the book\, there are many parts of the Jewish bible\, the TaNaKh\, we never read in services. The word TaNaKh is an acronym for the Jewish bible’s 3 categories of books: the Torah (the five books of Moses)\, Nevi’im (the Prophets)\, and Ketuvim (the Scriptures). Over the course of the Jewish year\, we read the full Torah\, but we never read the full books of NaKh (Nevi’im and Ketuvim).\nBut that has changed at Shaar Shalom!\nEach session\, we study one more chapter of NaKh: discovering why these words were so sacred to our ancestors\, and why so few Jews read them (outside of Halifax\, that is). Find Rabbi Rank’s table at kiddush for a little “NaKh and Nosh.”

SUMMARY:Yom HaShoah Ceremony 2018
DESCRIPTION:The AJC’s 2018 Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) Ceremony in Halifax will take place this year on Thursday\, April 12\, at 7 PM\, at Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21.\nThe event will feature a candle-lighting ceremony\, a presentation from the teenage participants of the 2017 Asper Foundation Human Rights and Holocaust Studies Program\, and a talk from special guest Allan Rosenfeld\, a physician and Holocaust Education advocate from Toronto who recently published his first book entitled Holocaust Lumber. \nReserve your seat here to confirm your attendance: https://yomhashoahpier21.eventbrite.ca \nAbout Holocaust Lumber: \nGrowing up on a lumberyard just outside Toronto\, Allan knew that he was different from most other kids. But it wasn’t the stacks of wood or the hard work of helping out around the yard that defined him – it was his role as the child of two Holocaust survivors. Always and above all else\, Allan knew that his parents had suffered through terrible atrocities\, and that he couldn’t cause them any more pain\, under any circumstances.\nHolocaust Lumber is a collection of 30 short stories that capture the complexities and humanity of his parents. Told with unflinching honesty\, these stories capture a world of lumber and love\, a setting of sweetness and survival\, a nightmare of guilt\, and the lighthearted\, absurd moments that are part of all families.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a spirited megillah reading including live musical comedy entertainment by our rabbinic team! Come in your best costume and be ready to make some noise and enjoy refreshments.\nAside from reading the megillah\, one of the key observances of Purim is helping those in need with gifts of food and money. This year\, on Purim eve\, we’re collecting non-perishable food items to donate to Feed Nova Scotia. We especially encourage you to bring items\, such as hard pasta\, that can make a loud sound and use as a grogger during the reading!

SUMMARY:Chai Mitzvah Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Chai Mitzvah is a program to enhance Jewish engagement. Like a book group\, Chai Mitzvah network groups meet monthly for meaningful text-based discussions. What sets Chai Mitzvah apart from education programs is that each person in the group builds their ‘Jewish Bucket List’ by adopting or deepening a spiritual practice\, engaging in a social action project of their choosing\, and identifying something Jewish to learn about. The cost of all of the packets is $36 USD\, which each participant pays once at the beginning. \nAfter meeting for nine months\, participants receive a certificate of completion and a tree is planted in Israel in their honor.
