SUMMARY:NaKh and Nosh: Bible Beyond the Torah
DESCRIPTION:Although Jews are the people of the book\, there are many parts of the Jewish bible\, the TaNaKh\, we never read in services. The word TaNaKh is an acronym for the Jewish bible’s 3 categories of books: the Torah (the five books of Moses)\, Nevi’im (the Prophets)\, and Ketuvim (the Scriptures). Over the course of the Jewish year\, we read the full Torah\, but we never read the full books of NaKh (Nevi’im and Ketuvim).\nBut that has changed at Shaar Shalom!\nEach session\, we study one more chapter of NaKh: discovering why these words were so sacred to our ancestors\, and why so few Jews read them (outside of Halifax\, that is). Find Rabbi Rank’s table at kiddush for a little “NaKh and Nosh.”

SUMMARY:The Touch of a Woman in War: NaKh & Nosh reads Judges 4
DESCRIPTION:Women lead the revolution. Devorah governs and appoints Barak to muster Israelite fighters. The enemy Sisera seeks refuge with Ya’el\, who doesn’t provide much of a roof over his head. Why is this drama part of the Hebrew Bible\, and why do we benefit from reading this in the 21st century? Join Rabbi Rank during Kiddush to find out all that and more as we gather for a little NaKh (the final two thirds of the Bible) and a little Nosh (“senseless eating”).

SUMMARY:Breakfast Club: Water Protectors in Nova Scotia - a Film & Discussion at the Atalntic School of Theology
DESCRIPTION:Do we need Water Protectors in Nova Scotia? What are Water Protectors?\nThese are the questions we will explore through a short film “Water Protectors” screened at a Shaar Breakfast Club. Following the film\, a discussion will be facilitated by Eliza Knockwood\, a Spiritual Mi’kmaq artist/film producer\, and Bobbi Zahra. Eliza Knockwood will discuss her passion for a sustainable earth and Bobbi Zahra will weave in the natural fit with the indigenous people of Israel\, who understand the importance and sacredness of water. The discussion will also touch on ways in which minority populations can work together in activism. \nPlease note this Breakfast Club will be hosted at the Atlantic School of Theology. A donation of $5 is requested to cover food costs. \nPlease RSVP to the Shaar office if you plan to attend: shaarshalom @eastlink.ca \n

SUMMARY:Chai Mitzvah Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Chai Mitzvah is a program to enhance Jewish engagement. Like a book group\, Chai Mitzvah network groups meet monthly for meaningful text-based discussions. What sets Chai Mitzvah apart from education programs is that each person in the group builds their ‘Jewish Bucket List’ by adopting or deepening a spiritual practice\, engaging in a social action project of their choosing\, and identifying something Jewish to learn about. The cost of all of the packets is $36 USD\, which each participant pays once at the beginning. \nAfter meeting for nine months\, participants receive a certificate of completion and a tree is planted in Israel in their honor.

SUMMARY:NaKh and Nosh: Bible Beyond the Torah
DESCRIPTION:With the first chapter of the Book of Judges behind us\, we are ready to… find out that chapter 2 is a totally different introduction to the Book? Joshua (who already died at the end of the Book of Joshua) dies again\, some judges are appointed to leadership\, and the Israelites are on their absolute worst behaviour. If you want to find out what’s gone wrong (and what Jews and scholars have said about this chapter over the last 3000 years)\, come join Rabbi Rank at Kiddush for a little NaKh (the final 2/3 of the Hebrew Bible) and a little nosh (“food”).

SUMMARY:Yom HaShoah Ceremony 2018
DESCRIPTION:The AJC’s 2018 Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) Ceremony in Halifax will take place this year on Thursday\, April 12\, at 7 PM\, at Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21.\nThe event will feature a candle-lighting ceremony\, a presentation from the teenage participants of the 2017 Asper Foundation Human Rights and Holocaust Studies Program\, and a talk from special guest Allan Rosenfeld\, a physician and Holocaust Education advocate from Toronto who recently published his first book entitled Holocaust Lumber. \nReserve your seat here to confirm your attendance: https://yomhashoahpier21.eventbrite.ca \nAbout Holocaust Lumber: \nGrowing up on a lumberyard just outside Toronto\, Allan knew that he was different from most other kids. But it wasn’t the stacks of wood or the hard work of helping out around the yard that defined him – it was his role as the child of two Holocaust survivors. Always and above all else\, Allan knew that his parents had suffered through terrible atrocities\, and that he couldn’t cause them any more pain\, under any circumstances.\nHolocaust Lumber is a collection of 30 short stories that capture the complexities and humanity of his parents. Told with unflinching honesty\, these stories capture a world of lumber and love\, a setting of sweetness and survival\, a nightmare of guilt\, and the lighthearted\, absurd moments that are part of all families.
