SUMMARY:Dr. Saul Green Memorial Lecture - "Imagining Better Health Care: Can counterfactual (“what if...”) learning by analogy from the bible help?"
DESCRIPTION:The Dr. Saul Green Memorial Lecture addresses the intersection of Judaism\, medicine and humanitarianism\, all three of which Dr. Green was passionate about in his lifetime. The lecture focuses on complex humanistic and ethical challenges. The lectureship has been endowed by a gift from the Green family to honour the memory of Dr. Saul Green and to inspire and knit together the congregation of Shaar Shalom Synagogue and the community of Halifax. The lectureship partners are Shaar Shalom Synagogue and the University of King’s College. \nThis year’s lecture will be presented by Dr. Abraham (Rami) Rudnick\, a psychiatrist and philosopher. Dr. Rudnick is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and School of Occupational Therapy at Dalhousie University and the Clinical Director of the Nova Scotia Operational Stress Injury Clinic. He is a Canadian Certified Physician Executive and the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Mental Health. He is a recipient of many national and international awards and other recognitions. \nDr. Rudnick’s lecture will examine some promising aspects of creative and critical thinking such as learning from counterfactuals (using what if… examples) and learning by analogy (referring to similar issues in other areas of life). While these have not been sufficiently used for health care transformation\, his presentation will integrate these aspects to learn from the bible how to consider health care transformation in Canada. For example\, Abraham’s decision making to sacrifice his son will be used to argue for transformation in forensic psychiatry. Noah’s process for selecting animals for the Ark will be used to argue for transformation in health care funding.

SUMMARY:Dedication of the Morris & Esther Strug Memorial Garden
DESCRIPTION:A generous donation from the Strug family has made it possible to construct a permanent\, covered\, and landscaped seating area (with ritual wash station) in the Shaar Shalom Cemetery. At 10am on Sunday\, July 21st\, the Strug family will dedicate the area in memory of Morris and Esther Strug. The “Morris and Esther Strug Memorial Garden” is a touching way to remember forever two founding members of the Shaar Shalom. The beautiful seating area is nestled under a tree and oversees the final resting place of many of our other founding members as well as those who have been part of the Shaar community since.

DESCRIPTION:Although Jews are the people of the book\, there are many parts of the Jewish bible\, the TaNaKh\, we never read in services. The word TaNaKh is an acronym for the Jewish bible’s 3 categories of books: the Torah (the five books of Moses)\, Nevi’im (the Prophets)\, and Ketuvim (the Scriptures). Over the course of the Jewish year\, we read the full Torah\, but we never read the full books of NaKh (Nevi’im and Ketuvim).\nBut that has changed at Shaar Shalom!\nEach session\, we study one more chapter of NaKh: discovering why these words were so sacred to our ancestors\, and why so few Jews read them (outside of Halifax\, that is). SUMMARY:Dr. Saul Green Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:This year’s lecture will be presented by Dr. Sageev Oore a professor in the Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University and Visiting Faculty Research Scientist\, Google Brain\, Google Research (2016-2018). Dr. Oore’s lecture title is : The Electric Composer: Music\, AI and being human. He will talk about neural networks learning to generate music and address questions such as:\n• How does it do that?\n• How does it sound?\n• Is it music? & is that music— human? \n \nDr. Sageev Oore is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University\, a Research Faculty Member at the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Toronto\, and works as a professional musician. His research is focused on using machine learning and deep learning techniques for music and art. He recently spent a year and a half as a visiting scientist at Google Brain (California) on the Magenta team\, where he worked on generative systems such as PerformanceRNN. Together with his brother Dani\, he co-created “Radical Cycle”\, a duo instrumental CD combining classical art songs with improvisation. He has performed as soloist with orchestras both as a classical soloist and as an improviser. Sageev studied piano performance with music teachers from Dalhousie\, Juilliard\, and UBC. He completed his undergraduate degree in Mathematics (Dalhousie)\, and MSc and PhD degrees in Computer Science (University of Toronto) working with Geoffrey Hinton.

DESCRIPTION:Chai Mitzvah is a program to enhance Jewish engagement. Like a book group\, Chai Mitzvah network groups meet monthly for meaningful text-based discussions. What sets Chai Mitzvah apart from education programs is that each person in the group builds their ‘Jewish Bucket List’ by adopting or deepening a spiritual practice\, engaging in a social action project of their choosing\, and identifying something Jewish to learn about.  The cost of all of the packets is $36 USD\, which each participant pays once at the beginning. \nAfter meeting for nine months\, participants receive a certificate of completion and a tree is planted in Israel in their honor.
